パンジアシードジャパンは、国内初の、サメの保護や海洋保全への認識を高めるために活動している団体です。アート、音楽、教育といった啓蒙運動を通して、海の生態系や生物多様性に及ぼす影響などの理解を促進しています。
人々に一番恐れられているサメを一目見ようとパンジアシードインターナショナルの創立者達は10年近く前から、南や東南アジアに足を運び追いかけてきました。フカヒレとしてや水槽の中で見る以外、サメを自然界見られる機会は滅多にありません。サメは食物連鎖の頂点に位置する捕食者であるため、海洋生態系で重要な役割を果たしているのにも関わらず、香港や日本において驚くべき速度で捕獲されています。世界各地において、容赦なくサメを乱獲する光景は驚異的で唖然とさせられます。
サメの乱獲に立ち向かう解決策は簡単です：サメを守り、海を守り、私たちを守ります。

パンジアシードはサメの保護と海洋保全に寄与し、環境活動と持続可能な消費を活発に促すよう働きかけています。美しい海と生物多様性を未来に残すことを目的に活動しています。

活動内容
パンジアシードジャパンは非政府組織（NGO）と特定非営利活動法人（NPO）と個人や団体と共にサメや海の生態系についての社会認識を高めようと積極的に教育しています。
アーティビズム1、行事、講演やキャンペーンなどといった啓蒙運動を通し、海を保全する社会の認識を高めるよう活動しています。

名前の由来
パンジアとはギリシャ語で「すべての大陸」という意味です。2億5,000万年前頃に誕生した大陸はパンジア大陸とよばれていました。一つであった超大陸が移動し、その位置や形状を変えた結果、現在の諸大陸が形成されたのです。
サメはその超大陸が存在していた当時から海のバランスを保ってきました。しかし、海洋生態系の最高捕食者として今後どれくらい続くのでしょうか？パンジアシードは世界中の人々と海やサメを保護する大切さについて国際的理解を高めようと教育や啓蒙運動を通じて、一緒に活動しています。どこに住んでいようとも、ライフスタイルと消費の仕方は様々なところで生物及び生態系に影響を及ぼしています。そういう意味では、植物や人間も含めた動物は、パンジア大陸のように、すべて繋がっているのです。
パンジアシードの「シード」は種という意味で、成長していくイメージから付けられました。パンジアシードが発信する情報によって、国際的なサメの保護や海を保全する意識が高められるよう努めています。
またSeedはSustainability (持続可能性), Education(教育), Ecology（ 生態学）、Design　(デザイン)の頭文字でもあります。
Sustainability持続可能性：世界規模な大量消費や海洋開発が進められている現状況に対して、善い先例を作ろうと励んでいます。自然環境に影響を与えないよう、商品開発や共同経営者を選ぶ際には持続可能な漁業を支持し、環境に優しい材料を使用する、同じ倫理を持つ会社と契約を交わすように努めています。
Education教育：積極的なリサーチによってサメや海の現状況を関係者ならびに一般の人たちにも共有しています。
Ecology 生態学：人間と自然界の関係や海の生態系・生物多様性に及ぼす影響など、生態学的認識を高めています。
Designデザイン：アート、映像、写真、グラフィックデザインは、文化や国境を超え、サメの問題など一般的に馴染みの少ない問題の関心を高め、世界中の人々を一つにする可能性があると信じています。

目指す未来
パンジアシードが設立された当初、サメが危機にある状況について知っている人はあまりいませんでした。それが科学者や報道記者、映画制作者、アーティスト、写真家、世界中の活動家によって、時が経つにつれて改善していきました。インターネットの普及やフェイスブックなどといったソーシャルメディアとも相まって、サメや海の保全問題に関心を抱く団体がインターネット上で日に日に増しています。旧態依然とした働きとインターネットだけでもサメなどを含む海洋問題についての意識を高めることができます！

ABOUT PANGEASEED JAPAN (PSJ)

PangeaSeed Japan is dedicated to bringing awareness through education on the plight of sharks and other marine species in an effort to preserve and protect the world’s oceans. Based in and focused on Japan, we work in collaboration with PangeaSeed International (established in 2009 in Japan and now based in the USA) following its objectives and ethos.

PangeaSeed Japan was the first organization in the country focused on bringing awareness about sharks in addition to ocean conservation. Through art, music and education activities and activism, we hope to encourage an understanding and awareness of all marine life with a focus on preservation and conservation.

For close to a decade now, PangeaSeed International’s founding members have been traveling all over South and Southeast Asia, trying to catch a glimpse of the one animal that most people fear. Besides seeing them on menus and in fish tanks, only on a handful of occasions have we have been fortunate enough to actually view these majestic creatures in their natural environment. From Hong Kong to Japan, we have found ourselves literally up to our necks in the bodies and fins of what science considers to be one of the most important animals in the ocean. The seemingly relentless and inexplicable global pursuit to harvest the ocean’s sharks is staggering and mind boggling.

Our solution is simple: Save the sharks, save the oceans, save ourselves.

OUR MISSION

PSJ’s mission is to contribute to the protection of sharks, our oceans and marine life by undertaking actions that encourage environmental activism and sustainable consumption choices. Our vision is of a future where our oceans are alive and the creatures living in the m thrive.

HOW WE DO IT

PSJ is a Japan-based non-governmental and not-for-profit organisation working together with creative individuals and groups towards a common goal of positive education about sharks and marine life. Through artivism, events, educational talks and campaigns we work to create a change within the community and develop an understanding of the need to preserve and protect the world’s oceans.

Artivism |ˈärtəˌvizəm| – An explosion of creativity and a marriage of art and activism. We believe that art, design and new media can transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries inspiring positive global change. PangeaSeed collaborates with today’s most influential creative minds to help give the oceans the voice they so desperately need.

WHAT’S BEHIND THE NAME?

Pangea derives from ancient Greek and means the entire Earth. It is the name that has been given to the supercontinent surrounded by a single vast ocean that existed about 250 million years ago before plate tectonics shifted the land masses to their now recognizable forms. Sharks ruled the oceans then as they continue to now…but for how much longer?

PangeaSeed aims to open a dialog to share ideas and develop a better global understanding of our connection with sharks and the oceans. Through education, awareness and action we are working together to solve this environmental crisis. No matter where you are in the world, your lifestyle and consumption habits positively or negatively effect the ecosystem and therefore every other animal (including humans) and plant. In short, like Pangea, we are all connected.

The word “seed” conjures up an image of growth. Through the PangeaSeed network, we strive to grow together to develop a better global understanding of the need to protect sharks and preserve the oceans. The “seed” in PangeaSeed also refers to Sustainability, Education, Ecology and Design.

Sustainability – PangeaSeed strives to be a positive and proactive example of sustainability in a world of rampant consumerism and ecosystem exploitation. When we produce merchandise or build a partnership, we make it a priority to choose environmentally friendly materials and like-minded partners to ensure our products and actions have a minimal impact on the Earth’s natural environment.

Education – By actively conducting research, we aim to better inform ourselves and the general public of the reality of our marine neighbours and their habitat.

Ecology – Ecological awareness heightens our understanding of our relationship with the natural world and the direct impact we have on marine biodiversity and the ocean ecosystem.

Design – Art, film, photography and graphic design, we believe, can transcend cultures and borders and help raise awareness and unite people across the globe.

MOVING FORWARD

When PangeaSeed first began a few years ago, it was nearly impossible to come across someone aware of the global shark plight. However, times are changing – and for the better! With the efforts of scientists, journalists, filmmakers, artists, photographers and activists worldwide, the message is spreading to the masses aided by the increasing global access to computers and the use of social media. It seems we’re seeing multiple new groups appear online daily, dedicated to issues like shark and ocean conservation. We can now do so much to spread awareness of ocean and shark conservation – with little more than an Internet connection and old-fashioned hard work!
