I disagree, you may not equate it to a gay slur, I do not equate it to a gay slur, most people don't, but some people will. There may be some person on the edge of suicide somewhere because of abuse in which the word faggot was used liberally, and seeing their favourite TV star use the word offensively could really hurt. It's for that reason that Jonah's sincere apology is needed, intent has nothing to do with it.

So fucking what.

They need a psychologist, not for the whole fucking world to step on eggshells, jesus christ.

Are you kidding? Homophobia is a massive problem. More than 2.7 billion people live in countries where being gay is a crime. Even in countries like the US and UK where gay people are becoming more accepted, a large portion still face discrimination. And on a worldwide level, homophobia, discrimination and persecution towards gay people is scarily bad. So unless you're a homophobe yourself, surely you can deal with not calling people faggots.

No i can not.

I have plenty of gay friends, good gay friends. Hey i dont care if you want to be two guys 69ing in the goddamn park infront of everyone. Go get married, go adopt children, use spermdonors. Ive been in rallies for gay pride, ive actively supported gay marriage etc. i dont give a fuck what sexuality you are, but ill still say "holy fuck thats gay" when i feel it fits.

Just like im going to use PMS on overreactions, retarded for stupid shit etc.

There is a difference between joking with your friends and calling someone in public that you don't know a faggot.

So you agree intent has everything to do with it?

Exactly these people are well up in the cognitive dissonance spectrum.

Yes there is, and? Doesn't change the fact that some people would still be offended. Anyone can be offended by anything because simply feeling offended is your ego and insecurities reacting.

Do you think its unreasonable for a gay person to be offended by a homophobic slur?

No.

But it's unreasonable for a person to blame anyone else than themselves for feeling offended.

You know what happens when you are offended? Absolutely nothing. Nothing happens, nobody cares. Being offended is a personal issue. You choose to be offended. Nothing is inherently offensive.

You're the type of guy who will complain his free speech rights are being trampled on when he gets fired for being offensive at work.

Not at all. That's a moron. I just don't think we should be so carefully politically correct because a few people find everything offensive.

Great avoidance of his argument. You slipped into ad hominem right out the gate.

[–]I-Haf -3

I'm pretty sure he'll get right back to you with that comment once he gets back from middle school.

Aaah, what a great comment kiddo.

[–]chlp_chipperson 1 ポイント2 ポイント

Well that's productive -- just because you don't agree with the guy's opinion, you insult him.

[–]endless_ennui 0 ポイント1 ポイント

is being a kid an insult now? wow

While I agree to some extent, the problem is you can find people who are offended by anything. Would he be apologizing if he made a joke about Catholics? I'm sure tons of Catholics would be offended. I guess the difference is that Catholics aren't really persecuted, but many of them seem to believe they are so they would get upset.

You can't just avoid people's feelings forever.

[–]Auto_Grammar_Bot 0 ポイント1 ポイント

I agree with the persecuted distinction, it's the same way I'm happy to ridicule gingers, because they're not a minority who are sincerely persecuted.

So what... you are supposed to censor yourself because someone somewhere may be offended? If that was the case we would all be living in secluded bubbles without any social contact. This whole PC culture is complete bullshit because it is impossible to not offend everyone all at once without offending someone.

EDIT: Before people start ripping into me, I am by no means supporting the use of that word, nor am I condoning the irrational outbursts against Jonah. I am simply stating that people will always be offended at your actions, no matter what you do. This shit shouldn't even be newsworthy.

[–]Auto_Grammar_Bot -1 ポイント0 ポイント

No, calling someone a faggot is not some trivial thing where 1 in a billion will feel insulted, homophobia is present and real. I'm not saying every conceivably offensive phrase should be censored, I'm saying people should have a little more tact when a homophobic slur doesn't need to be used when other insults are available.
