This seems like a super easy fix though. Cut down current trees and plant new trees in the planters.

Also, trees aren't free. Those would be a couple hundred each.

Not exactly that easy. You will have to bring something in to dig up enough dirt so there is space for the entire tree/roots you are placing in there without damaging the bricks that have been laid. Then you add on top of that the cost for transporting the tree there, and THEN you can add the cost of getting trees that size which is several hundred dollars per tree depending on the type (or even thousands).

the super easy fix is lay brick in the existing planters and tear up the portion around the trees
