Otto Carius turnes 92 today! Happy Birthday!

Oberleutnant Otto Carius (born 27 May 1922) is a former German Wehrmacht German Army (1935–1945) tank commander who fought during World War II and is credited with destroying more than 150 tanks. He is also a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves (German: Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub).

Um, yeah, happy birthday and all, but why are we celebrating the fact that he destroyed more than 150 tanks?  Are people fucking stupid?  He was a German tank commander.  A GERMAN tank commander.  That means, he killed more than 150 ALLIED tank crews.  I’m not dissing the guy, you do what you have to do, but WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU PEOPLE CELEBRATING THE FACT THAT HE KILLED 150 ALLIED TANK CREWS!?

Outstanding feats of bravery and calm in the field of battle have always been commended in human history, no matter which banner they fly.  Alexander the Great, Adolphus Gustavus, Hannibal, Scipio Africaanus, Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson, George S Patton.

War is terrible and terrifying and Otto Carius in particular suffered through the most horrifying theatre of war (the Eastern Front) during the most horrifying war of human history.  I respectfully commend his skills, tactical prowess, intelligence, patience and calm personality while under fire.

And while it may seem backwards to some to commend the great efforts of one who was once an enemy of their nation, it’s simply a matter of perspective, understanding, and respect.  Carius himself held no allegiance to the political regime that had taken his nation hostage, but rather, to his homeland and family.  He was a soldier, and he did his duty.  One must always remember that on the other side of the battlefield, every man has loved ones back home praying for their safe return and an expedient end to the war.

I hope this helped in your understanding.

Again, I have nothing against him, I understand that as a soldier, your job is to follow orders and fight for your country.  It just seems wrong to say, “Yeah, great job dude!”  when talking about our men dying.  He should be commended for his bravery, but not for his kill count.  Especially not when it’s our guys he killed.

This is another thing, we’ve gotten to the point now where saying something like that is wrong.  People will look at what I just said, and say, “Yeah, but you celebrate American soldiers’ kill counts!”  Yes, I do, because I’m an American, and they were the enemy.  If you’re German and you’re congratulating his kill count, that’s fine, because we were the enemy.  But to see people from Allied countries disregarding the fact that he was killing Allied troops just doesn’t sit right.

Why would you celebrate anybodies kill count?

Because they’re the enemy, and the enemy needs to die in order to win.  It’s the best way to boost morale, like, “Hey, guys, look how good we’re doing!”
