Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes did the same thing. Disobeyed Portuguese dictator Salazar's direct orders and wrote 30000 visas. Was fired and, unable to find a job, died in poverty with no one really knowing his story. It was because of his actions that Portugal kept the doors open, and through it, millions found safe passage away from the war.
