Now, the train accident that snarled the busiest mass transit system in America. Today, a New York City subway derailed just after rush hour, hundreds of passengers were forced to climb emergency ladders to escape the underground tunnel and they emerged back on the street. ABC's Ron Claiborne tells us what happened below ground.
It happened just before 10:30 this morning, aboard a subway train packed with about a thousand passengers.

"We were literally just sitting on the train like normal, and then the train just jerked so fast."

The middle six cars derailing while rolling down the track. Some passengers panicked, mistaking a thick dust cloud for smoke. It took more than an hour to get all of those passengers off of that subway train, led by first responders in small groups to the emergency exits, where they came up to the sidewalk to safety.

さて、アメリカの最も混雑する大量輸送機関を、混乱に陥れた列車事故のニュースです。今日、ラッシュアワーの直後に、ニューヨーク市の地下鉄が脱線しました。何百人もの乗客が非常用の避難はしごを上って地下のトンネルから脱出する事態になりましたが、乗客たちは再び道路に姿を現しました。ＡＢＣのロン・クレイボーンが、地下での出来事をお伝えします。
事故は今朝１０時半ちょっと前に起きました。およそ１,０００人の乗客で満員の地下鉄でのことです。
乗客は「私たちはただいつものように電車の中で座っていたんです。すると車両が急にすごい勢いで、ガクッと動いたんです」と話しています。
真ん中の６両が、線路を走っている時に脱線しました。何人かの乗客は、充満した砂ぼこりを煙と間違えてパニック状態になりました。
全ての乗客がその地下鉄から脱出するのに１時間以上かかりました。少人数ずつが（消防の）緊急救助隊に非常口まで先導され、そこから安全な歩道に上がりました。
