I have a workman's comp sponsored vacation this week from a possible whooping cough exposure on a call. No symptoms, only vacation. The best kind of precaution.

I don't understand.... You work in ems, we're exposed to a sick person, and get paid time off? If you're not sick, why work comp? I've been exposed to tb like 10,000 times and haven't got work comp for it....

Whooping cough is really contagious and dangerous to young children and the elderly. Doctor said I need 5 days off while taking the round of antibiotics so that I don't expose anyone else.

Are you a child or the elderly? Because if that is the case wouldn't every provider who came in contact with this person need time off?

My point is, if you're not symptomatic and infected, prophylactic antibiotics and time off is downright stupid. Wonder how we get super bugs? We give out antibiotics to people who "might" be infected somehow.

Seriously, an ambulance is a Petri dish on wheels. I bet you've been exposed to whooping cough a dozen times. As someone who actually contracted pertussis about 10 years ago, while I was already sick with the flu and bronchitis, I can tell you that none of the normal healthy people around me got it from just being around me....

Don't put their wet stuff on your wet stuff and their is very little to fear.

Did the doctor you saw then start treating himself with antibiotics because he was exposed to someone who was exposed to whooping cough?

Seriously. There isn't a lick of logic in this.

I am neither a child or elderly. However I do treat those types of Pts quite often on the job. What would you like me to tell you? Do you think I'm lying? Are you a doctor? You do seem to know a lot about this based on your one experience. Our jobs are not the typical 'tough it out and go to work when sick' type of jobs. By doing that, you are potentially negatively affecting people who you are supposed to be helping. It is irresponsible. I was making a statement as to what my treatment plan was as given to me by my doctor (yes, the doctor is the one who saw me and my partner as well). This entire treatment was a precaution as I stated, and one that I don't have a problem with as I would rather not just wait it out and see if I come down with pertussis. Come down off of your mighty golden high horse.

No, not my ONE experience. I'm an experienced critical care provider who works with really fucking sick people every single day and this is cracking me up. Seriously. You were around a sick person and now this means you need antibiotics and a week off!

Jesus. Id get to go to work for a day and then a week off. I could work 50 days a year!

Treatment plans are for people with an illness. Which you do not have.

If you're not sick, you shouldn't be getting treated. If you had some symptom, sure, get treated and take time off. But otherwise, take a shower, wash your clothes, and repeat.

I should have told that doctor what was up!

"Listen doc, this critical care paragod on Reddit told me that I shouldn't be getting any treatment and damn sure shouldn't be getting any time off because I probably don't have anything at all. You may refer any questions to the honorable jd3p0."

I've learned something from this. Next time some uppity doc tries to tell me what to do I'm gonna go all Rage Against The Machine on his bitch ass!
