The most complex and beautiful music ever made comes from metal, classical, and bluegrass genres. The songs have sub-text. They have meaning. They are layered. They have purpose.

He's only missing Pink Floyd, Queen and Modest Mouse from going full circlejerk.

All I said was that EDM listeners are typically dumb college kids. Am I wrong?

I wonder who didn't get invited to any parties in college :^)

They have purpose

Leaving aside the fact that saying art should have "purpose" to be worthwhile is laughably stupid and robotic, did this motherfucker just claim that he can't find a practical purpose for Electronic DANCE Music?!

What the fuck is more straight-up purposeful than that? I'm honestly struggling to think of musical genres that have the same air of "this is what this music is for", maybe religious hymns.

And what tangible purpose do his pet genres serve? Do Primus songs give people the strength to build houses for the destitute like they're fucking cans of spinach in Popeye or something?!

I always thought Radiohead was the indie-ish rock band of choice on Reddit.

and not just because I'm a huge fan of Modest Mouse

I'm iffy on if this is drama, but I'll let the votes decide.

I save myself the trouble of all these genre differences by just referring to all EDM as "techno", especially around genre purists.

This just made me think.

In an intergalactic society, with people of entirely different species, the genres would be even more complicated. We'd refer to some music as, "That's solar system 27," but then solar system 27 would have a bunch of different genres within itself that come from different planets, then different continents within those planets, then regions, and genres within regional genres.

Cool.

It's kind of like this already! Most non-Western music is just referred to as "world music" nowadays, so it sound impressively to specific for one to be able to hear a folk piece and say "that's Javanese". And then for a second piece: "that's Javanese too". And the two pieces would sound very similar. But in Java, the two pieces would be understood to be very different. Sometimes all it takes for two pieces to be considered to different genres in folk culture is something as simple as a different playing style for a specific instrument.

Now, to many that would sound like something laughably minuscule when explained to us (Just the playing style?! Harrumph, they're still basically the same genre) and yet I bet that even a very musically un-educated American would hear a ragtime piano piece and understand it differently than a boogie-woogie piano piece even though

1) Those two genres are not even popular anymore, to the point where the American may not even be able to put a name to the two different genres

2) The two genres are mainly separated by just the way the piano is played

It would actually probably sound completely completely alien (duh) to us too, because the tones of musics in the world are based around the kind of tones vowels make, which are surprising consistent across human languages.

So an alien music with alien language would have completely different tonal makeup to human ones, and would actually probably be really difficult for humans to differentiate. Like how people who speak nontonal languages have a rough ass time understanding or learning tonal languages.

You know those sci-fi (kinda already exist) "automatic translators" which you can just speak into and have it come out translated into an alien language.

Wonder if there'd be a music translator, too.

That's an interesting idea I will keep in mind when I write my sci fi novel. (Like that will ever happen)

[–]My-Name-Is-Awkward 0 ポイント1 ポイント

Sure. I'll be fair and take only 49% of the profits for the idea.

I'm just kidding.

Hell, I'm by no means a purist and that still made me flinch.

[–]happyscrappy 3 ポイント4 ポイント

It's no dumber than "EDM", IMHO.
