Just a PSA: to everyone crying genocide, Modi has been cleared of all charges by the Supreme Court of India Special Investigation Team appointed by the Supreme Court. And the earlier ruling party has had their fair share of genocide, too. It's just that we have an incredibly biased media.

And about the Hindutva angle - I'm an atheist, and I share more (culturally) with Christianity, if at all, and I couldn't care less. You have to play the religion card to get votes out here.

Edit: now that this has reached the top, I'd like to take opportunity to point out that I, along with 5,000,000 other voters from my state, were not allowed to vote - our names were mysteriously taken off/not added to the voters' list. The levels of corruption in the Congress are unimaginable, even compared to, say, Greece and Spain.

Exactly, I'm working with NGO's in Gururat at the moment, and every single worker has dozens of stories of how they were prevented from bringing food and medical supplies, or even entering the muslim camps, by police and other officials.

Maybe he didn't help instigate it. But he failed his duty in office by wilfully neglecting the situation, to the detriment of the muslim population.

And I've heard opposing stories from other NGOs; my Muslim Gujarati friends are more than happy to vote for Modi.

There's always two sides to a story, but you can't deny that the reason a large number of Muslims in India are uneducated and poor is because they're a good vote bank for the Congress, as long as they remain that way.

Modi says that he wants Muslims with a Quran in one hand and a laptop in the other. That's admirable, IMO, as well as the stuff in their manifesto about upgrading madrasas to modern standards. And a uniform civil code is something you can't rationally fight against, anymore.

That sounds like what Republicans say about blacks who vote for Democrats.

Look, let's be honest - democracy is stupid. Giving an absolutely ignorant person the same voting power as an educated, well-read person is pretty irrational.

That being said, all Congress have to do to get votes amongst poor Muslim communities is to talk about how much Hindus hate them and want them dead/out of the country (let's be fair, some cunts do). This just worsens the problem because there's more hate all around. So these guys vote en masse - they've all got huge families, because sex ed and family planning in India? Hahahaha.

The marginalisation increases, the hate increases. We need to start treating all religions as equal, quite literally - laïcité, rather than the bullshit we have.

You just regurgitated half the Southern Democrat party talking points from 1940 to 1964.

And why is that wrong? I'm not trying to be a cunt, I'm genuinely curious.

americans have trouble understanding that other countries dynamics are different to their own.

Well, I was born in India and I live in America so it's very easy for me to see the parallels in both countries.

You just generalized an entire group of people as being too stupid to think for themselves and that you know better for them. Why would Muslims vote for the BJP when you see what other parties help form that coalition? Southern Democrats who later became Republicans have often danced around the same line of thinking regarding Black people (and lately, Hispanics), i.e. not seeing them as an individual but rather as a homogeneous group.

[–]perseus0807 3 ポイント4 ポイント

Oh, that's what you meant.

Okay, I don't think you can compare the US to India here.

I live next to a slum/ghetto. I drive through it everyday. It has a couple of thousand occupants, maybe. My maid lives there. Here's what she (and others) told me.

The local politician distributes cheap booze and gets a DJ over there every other Sunday (I've seen this myself - blocked road on a Sunday evening). This is extremely illegal, but the police don't mess with politicians. Then, when election season rolls around, he tells them that he'll demolish all their houses and make sure their men never find work unless they vote for him.

They all do, because they're piss scared, and hey, there's always booze. Most of the men are alcoholics who beat their wives (most of whom work as maids) and spend their money on more booze.

This happens all across India. This happens/happened almost nowhere in the United States. So when I say that there are groups of people that do not think for themselves - I did not say they're too stupid, I said they're too misinformed and scared - please believe me. Don't try to view other countries through the same lens you'd view your own; especially not a third-world country.
