The author was kind enough to present his opinion without being denigrating towards anyone personally. He simply explains his position, and I think he did that exceptionally well, even if I disagree with it.

Please conduct yourself with more decorum here.

honestly, at this point and seeing all the negative comments in this post of yours, i have to ask this:

Or what? what are you gonna do about guys that refuse to conduct themselves with more decorum here?

kindly ask them to stop? try to depute their crude refusal to live and let live with reason?

whatever you are doing now, it obviously isn't working.

i don't know how to fix the problem, other than cleaning house of these luddite OH purists, who can't just let any commentary about the new books or stories within be posted without spewing out their own turd of a comment demonstrating their stubborn refusal to move on.

but then it wouldn't be /r/Dune, if there wasn't kanly.

[–]telldrakThe Tyrant[S] 3 ポイント4 ポイント

THE FORMS OF KANLY MUST BE OBEYED!

Seriously though - Give it time. I have faith that the people here are all capable of defending their positions without resorting to personal attacks.

So far, in this thread, the animosity has come from the camp that defends the new books.

All I can do is call it when I see it.

[–]aDDnTNHistorian -4 ポイント-3 ポイント

why should that camp have to defend the books? why are they under attack?

the animosity comes from utter confusion as to why their camp is under attack and for that matter, why there are "camps" anyway and why is the other camp attacking them.

blame the victim, much? /s

btw, i have yet to see an adequate reason for this aggression from the FH camp. most of their reasons can be simplified by "i hate the new and unknown!"

you want me to be open and understanding towards this attitude? so our ancestors should have been more accepting of the beliefs of those that felt fire was a dangerous and terrifying thing? should we not have created civilization because of the plagues that it brings? why am i even reading science fiction then? if they want dogma they can go to /r/religion.

Will you stop being such a bloody prick? I swear, almost all you do here is bitch and whine about being persecuted, but from what I'm seeing here, you are just as guilty of jumping all over any opinion that is different than yours as they are, if not MORE SO.

DON'T BE A DICK. How much more clearly can I make that?

I'm not singling you out here, YOU ARE. Stop being a lousy ambassador and be nice.

[–]aDDnTNHistorian -2 ポイント-1 ポイント

stop being a diplomat and moderate.

are you "the tyrant" or not?

perhaps it's time for a change in flair. may i suggest "chairdog"?

Hang on, let me run on over to /r/nuDune and make demands of the staff to behave as I wish them to.

The concept here is extremely simple - Agree or disagree, make it about the source material, DO NOT MAKE IT PERSONAL.

People that don't like the BH/KA books are perfectly entitled to feel however they want about it, and are welcome to express why they feel the way they do - I'll even accept a little bit of contempt towards the authors, because it's part of the topic - The issue is about the quality of the stories, to which, the authors are responsible, and can be called to account.

What I won't accept is attacks against other members personally. Liking the prequels doesn't make you a piece of shit any more than not liking them does, how you present yourself DOES.

You know what? I have NEVER ONCE received messages from detractors of the books asking me to put people in their place, demanding to know why I allow people to say things they don't like.

You, on the other hand, contact me constantly, calling into question my decisions on policy here, demanding that I do something to appease your sense of righteousness, and to be your personal smiter.

No. I will not be beholden to anyone, nor will I play favorites. I judge based on the merits of actions and words - I am being diplomatic because I am trying to do what I can to keep our sub civil without having to resort to banning people.

You created /r/nuDune as a haven for people who like the new books to discuss them without having to be bothered by things like differing opinions - That's great, good luck with that, but here, we're trying to allow for EVERYONE who loves Dune, no matter how they do, to feel welcome, and part of the community and conversation.

I am downright sick to death of dealing with the squabbles here. I've asked you all to be adults and to behave yourselves on your own accord, and some of you simply steadfastly refuse to do so.

I shouldn't have to consider alternatives to keeping the peace here. I shouldn't have to be making these posts, I shouldn't have to be explaining the two simple rules again and again, yet here we are - In the same thread no less!

Look, I'm not trying to piss you off, make you look dumb, or single you out as some sort of scapegoat - You're simply getting out of hand. If you follow the guidelines, then I can't rightly call you out for anything.

When people attack you, rather than your opinion, they are making it clear that they cannot refute the opinion, and are then left with one option - Attempt to discredit the holder of the opinion.

Let's try to avoid straw-man attacks here.

lol, demands of /r/nuDune staff: POST SOMETHING DAMNIT!

rubbing my face in it!

but here, we're trying to allow for EVERYONE who loves Dune, no matter how they do, to feel welcome, and part of the community and conversation and shit on everyone that isn't in their camp.

FTFY
