Pocket Monsters #29

Culture Edit
Satoshi names his boxing lesson "For the Sake of Tomorrow #1", the same name Danpei gave the first lesson he taught Joe in Ashita no Joe.
The dub eliminates this reference.
Ash: You got to learn the basics first.
Satoshi: For the Sake of Tomorrow #1:
(サトシ): 明日のためにその1

In the original, one of Anoki's main character traits is his fondness of yojijukugo, compounds of four kanji. Yojijukugo are generally seen as poetic and stylish, and many of them have idiomatic meanings. Since this trait couldn't be translated into English for obvious reasons, a good part of the character's charm got lost in the process. Below is a list of his compounds.
Timecode | English dub equivalent | Translation of original line | Original yojijukugo |
---|---|---|---|
4:04 | How many times do I have to tell you? | Security is the greatest enemy!! | 油断大敵 |
4:06 | Don't drop your guard! | A second of carelessness, a lifetime of injury!! (Same meaning as the English idiom "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". This is an eight-kanji compound, included for completeness) | 注意一秒、怪我一生 |
4:13 | Now go knock that pipsqueak out! | Full-force fighting!! | 全力勝負 |
4:37 | I declare Hitmonchan the winner! | A perfect conclusion!! | 完全決着 |
4:39 | Congratulations! | A clear victor!! | 勝利確定 |
13:11 | Time to face facts. | Seven falls, eight risings!! (Same meaning as the English idiom "Life has its ups and downs") | 七転八起 |
14:19 | Keep on moving. Keep on fighting. | A second of carelessness, a lifetime of injury!! (Same meaning as the English idiom "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". This is an eight-kanji compound, included for completeness) | 注意一秒、怪我一生 |
14:34 | Gotta be smart! | Extravagant brilliance!! | 豪華絢爛 |
14:34 | Gotta be strong! | Hurricanes and raging waves!! (same meaning as the English expression "Storm and stress") | 疾風怒濤 |
14:34 | Gotta keep moving! | Literally "Wind, forest, fire, mountain!!" Means to be "Swift as wind, quiet as forest, fierce as fire, and immovable as a mountain". This was the motto of the feudal lord Takeda Shingen, quoted from The Art of War by Sun Wu. | 風林火山 |
20:17 | There's no need to worry. | That's a sacred promise!! | 約束厳守 |
Culture Edit
Anoki gets his name and character design from Japanese pro wrestler Antonio Inoki.
Script Error
Anoki says nothing about waiting at the gym or where its located in the Japanese original like Anthony does in the English dub.
Anthony: I'll be in the gym taking on challengers. The gym's that way. I'll be waiting for you.
Anoki: I'll accept challenges from anybody! Boys and girl, I await you in the ring!
(アノキ): 私は誰の挑戦でも受ける。少年少女の諸君、リングで待ってるぞ!

Paint Edit
The sign on the outside of the building was changed from Tōkon Gym (闘魂ジム) and was replaced with "Fighting Spirit". Tōkon translates to "Fighting Spirit" so the English dub was accurate except for removing the 'Gym" part.
Paint Edit
The sign on the inside of the building was changed from Tōkon (闘魂) and was replaced with "Fighting Spirit Gym". The inside and outside paint edits are opposite from the Japanese original.

Manami in the Japanese original says its just a martial arts competition which means it doesn't limit it to only Fighting type Pokémon.
Rebecca: It's a tournament for fighting Pokémon.
Manami: It's a martial arts tournament for Pokémon.
(マナミ): ポケモン達への格闘技の大会です。

Once again martial arts in the Japanese original vs fighting Pokémon in the English dub.
Brock: Ash, don't you have a fighting Pokémon we could use?
Takeshi: Satoshi, don't you have a Pokémon ideal for martial arts, too?
(タケシ): 格闘に持って来いのポケモンをサトシも持ってるだろう?

Musashi says she wants savoury pancake (okonomiyaki お好み焼き) in the Japanese original which was removed in the English dub.
Jessie: Then I'd do a bit of jewelry shopping, and after all that, I'd invite some close friends over for a nice quiet dinner at home.
Musashi: After I dress up in some exquisite clothing, several pretty boys will accompany me as we go get some savoury pancakes.
(ムサシ): 高価のお洋服で身支度したら、美少年達をたーんと従えてお好み焼き食べに行くの。

Paint Edit
Most of the banners of the stadium are painted out in the English dub. All of the banners say "P-1 Grand Prix" (P-1 グランプリ).
Paint Edit
As Anoki rises from underneath and the banners in the background that say "Victory" (必勝) and Poké Pitan P (ポケピタンP) get erased in the English dub.
Paint Edit
Just after Takeshi loses his match, the banners in the background say "Victory" (優勝) and "Do your best" (がんばれ).
Script Error
Takeshi specifically tells his Ishitsubute that he'll polish its injured spots until they're sparkling.
Brock: Don't worry, you'll be as solid as a rock again soon.
Takeshi: I'll polish your injured spots until they're sparkling.
(タケシ): 痛めた所はピカピカ磨いてやるからな。

James says he's hot in the English dub while Kojiro wants to switch places with Musashi.
James: And speaking of cooking, I'm broiling in here!
Kojiro: More importantly, let's switch top and bottom.
(コジロウ): それより、上と下代わってよ。

Paint Edit
The banner "Hooray, Hooray" (フレーフレー) is seen in the English dub and the Japanese original.
Script Error
The English dub mistranslates the line and says that Hitmonlee uses Mega Kick.
English Announcer: Hitmonlee's Mega Kick is getting the best of Hitmonchan!
Japanese Announcer: Sawamular's kicks are all fully connecting.

In the Japanese original, Nyarth says a million volts will be generated. In the English dub, Meowth says 100,000 volts will be generated by the device under the floor.
Meowth: Have Hitmonlee jump up, and then flip the switch. 100,000 volts will run through the ring, followed by an explosion.
Nyarth: When I do, a million volts of electricity will coarse through the top of the ring, then a bomb will detonate.
(ニャース): そうすればリング上に100万ボルトの電気が流れて(ニャがれて)、その後爆弾が爆発する仕掛けニャ。

The English dub ignores the Hi Jump Kick attack that was referenced in the Japanese original.
English Announcer: And it's all over! Primeape defeats Hitmonlee with a Seismic Toss!
Japanese Announcer: By dodging Sawamular's troublesome Hi Jump Kick Okorizaru settled the match with Seismic Toss!

"Go fight" (ファイトでGO) is seen on a poster in the background in the Japanese original. It was removed in the English dub.

The additional "for a while" in the English dub makes it seem like Ash never came back for his Primeape like he promised.
Anthony: Why don't you let me train him for a while?
Anoki: Won't you entrust it to me?
(アノキ): こいつを私に預けてみないか。

Ash's Primeape just won the P-1 championship but the English dub adjust Anthony's line to say he'll make it the champ, which he already is!
Anthony: I promise to turn him into a real P-1 champion.
Anoki: It's a P-1 champ, I'll definitely raise it into something grand.
(アノキ): 必ずやP-1チャンプとして大きく育てて見せる。
