任天堂のゲーム「トモダチコレクション 新生活」をめぐって、海外メディアが「任天堂は同性婚にノー」と報じるなど、波紋が広がっている。

「トモダチコレクション 新生活」は日本で2013年に発売されたニンテンドー3DS用のゲーム。自らの分身となるキャラクター「Mii」を操り、小さな島のなかで、他のキャラクターと遊んだり、時には恋愛、結婚するなど、仮想の人生を楽しむ。北米では2014年6月に「Tomodachi Life」というタイトルで販売が開始される予定だ。

今回の問題のきっかけとなったのは、このゲームが同性婚に対応していなかったことだ。アメリカに住む23歳のゲイの男性、タイ・マリーニさんがこのことを知り、動画で「同性婚もできるようにしてほしい」という内容の動画を投稿。#Miiquality と名づけたキャンペーンで、TwitterやFacebookに拡散するよう呼びかけた。

マリーニさんはトモダチコレクションについて、以下のように述べている。

「ゲイの自分としては、すごくがっかりしました。人間関係や結婚はこのゲームで大きな位置をしめていますから。フィアンセのMiiと遊びたいのに、それができない。もしやろうと思ったら、自分か、パートナーの性別を変えなくてはなりません。トモダチコレクションは、本当にファンタスティックなゲームです。だから、それがみんなが楽しめるものであってほしい。

でも、#Miiqualityのキャンペーンの目的は、ボイコットしたいのではありません。ボイコットしたら、よけいに状況が悪くなるだけです。このゲームを買って、要望を伝えていけばきっと対応してくれるはずです。同性婚に対応しているゲームはあるのですから、できるはずです」

このキャンペーンを受けて、任天堂のアメリカ法人は以下のようなコメントを発表。直接、機能を追加したり、次回作で盛り込むことについて明言を避けた。任天堂のコメントの全文とその訳を引用する。

「Tomodachi Life」によって、任天堂が社会的な見解を表現しようとする意図はありません。異性婚しかないのは、現実世界を再現したものというよりかは、ちょっと変わった、愉快なもうひとつの世界だからです。我々はゲーム会社として、なにより重要であり、目指しているのは、楽しんでもらえるゲームを創ることですから。

“Nintendo never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of Tomodachi Life. The relationship options in the game represent a whimsical and playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We are a games company first and foremost and our main objective is to create games and consoles for players to enjoy.”

こうした対応に、AP通信は「任天堂、仮想空間での平等にNo」という見出しで、厳しい論調で報じている。

この問題に表れているのは、同性婚が法律で禁じられている日本と、一部認められている欧米の文化の違い、ということだけでない。ゲームの中の世界であっても、他の地域の風習に最新の注意を払って、徹底しなければならないということだ。

――今回の問題を把握しているか？

認識していますが、「問題になっている」というのとは違うと思っています。呼びかけておられる男性の方は、抗議ではなく要望をされている、というふうにとらえています。

――海外メディアの報道について

日本では昨年発売されたものですし、お客様にも大変喜んでいただいています。

ゲームの中で、結婚したり、子供を作ったりという部分が特徴的なのは確かですが、それだけではありません。いろいろなことができるゲームですし、その部分のみが取り上げられるのは、ゲームの中身が理解されていないのかな、という印象です。まだ海外では発売すらされていないので、そういった報道になるのかもしれません。すでに発売された日本で大きな問題になってはいませんし、まずはゲームを楽しんでいただきたいと思います。

――グローバルに展開する企業として、要望に対してどのように対応するか？

慎重に検討しています。
