Some of these points are fair, but you do realize that ancient Egyptian culture no longer exists and therefore cannot be appropriated, correct? it’s a culture that has not existed for a long, long time now.

Um??? My best friend is Egyptian??? Also people from Egypt still exist??? The culture not dead, there’s living breathing Egyptians still alive and Egypt is still a country with a rich heritage excuse you

Ancient Egypt is not the same and does not follow the same cultural heredity as the current country called Egypt. In fact depending on the time period, the Egyptian empire has fallen several times. However, ‘ancient egypt’ with its mummies, masks, and heiroglyphs typically refers to Old Kingdom Egypt, which ended about 3500 years ago. Even Egypt’s New Kingdom, which ruled from 3500 to about 3000 BC, fell approximately three millennia ago.

In fact, Cleopatra, a more contemporary Egyptian ruler and BARELY of ancient Egypt, lived farther away timewise from the building of the pyramids than she does from today.

That’s a lot like saying that you can appropriate ancient Moche or Olmec civilization and culture because people still live in Peru and Mexico, despite the fact that both disappeared and neither civilization has existed for several thousand years.

Ignorance is thinking a country’s ancient cultures, customs, and civilizations are the EXACT SAME as current ones.

It’s still appropriation and Katy is undoubtedly racist. Of course cultures have changed, and civilizations have fallen, but it’s still a part of Egyptian history. Also, unless you look at Katy’s garments and research, you couldn’t on a glance guess what era she was meant to be from. The general consensus is that she was meant to be Cleopatra. Either way, people still have a right to their history. Ancient rulers are still a part of history, no matter if their rules and religions are still used today.

YOU ARE AWARE CLEOPATRA WAS GREEK AND NOT EGYPTIAN, RIGHT?

She wasn’t even Egyptian. She was fucking greek. Her father was fucking Ptolemy.

And once again, you cannot appropriate a culture that doesn’t exist anymore in any meaningful way.

Do you think that Avengers is appropriating because it pulls from Norse and Greek/Roman culture? Do you think that Stargate is appropriating because it pulls from ancient Egyptian culture?

This shit happened THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO. There is literally no one alive whose parents, grandparents, or even great-great-great-GREAT-grandparents remember or were affected by Ancient Egyptian rule.

In fact, there was a large period after Ancient Egypt where Egypt was under Roman rule and took Roman customs. NONE of the customs from ancient Egypt survive to today.

In fact current Egyptian culture has been appropriated by and has been appropriating surrounding customs for thousands of years.

Once again, you cannot appropriate a culture that NO LONGER EXISTS in any sort of meaningful fashion past perhaps some customs that have also stuck around in other areas.

Listen, if an Egyptian person says that Katy Perry is racist for that, it is. I’m not saying Katy Perry was meant to be Cleopatra, I was using that as a general premise. Now, if people from that culture say it’s racist, it’s racist. I’m just spreading the word on why she’s problematic.
