Nintendo recently reported a net loss of $229 million for the previous financial year, following disappointing Wii U sales. The company sold just 310,000 Wii U systems in the fourth financial quarter, compared to 450,000 units sold during the same period the year prior.

Nintendo also recently announced a new near field communication platform for Wii U and 3DS called Nintendo Figurine Platform (NFP). Speaking during the company's annual financial results briefing, president Satoru Iwata told investors:

"To establish new and growing areas through the active utilization of character IP, it is important for Nintendo to take risks ourselves and come up with interesting ways to use our character IP.

Although currently the Wii U is the only Nintendo hardware with a NFC reader/writer functionality, support will be introduced for the 3DS family of handhelds in the first half of 2015.

Nintendo has also said it will announce a number of NFP compatible games at E3 in June, and plans to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality beginning this Christmas season. NFP will be compatible with Wii U software from the end of 2014, and with 3DS software from next year.
