Printing With A Pencil Stub
So you don’t want to join pencil stubs and make a long pencil. No worries, we have another alternative, how about using them to print on paper. Yes, like a printer that uses pencil to print your documents. Traditional don’t you think? I feel the concept gets even more radical because it proposes the use of eraser to erase off mistakes! Do I hear my office scream in delight; no more cartridge woes!

Seems like a waste of energy to burn thhe wood from the pencil?
Great idea though using graphite

can be worked out using lead and solar power then it might become a total nature lover.

It’s cool idea!! my respect to author

Really cool stuff! i hope it gets implemented soon

This concept is great. I don’t know anybody who likes buying cartridges, so your support would be immediate. Ink will stay the standard for legal docs and such, but for office proofs and doc checking this would be ideal. Great inspiration.
Julia says
I like the idea, however what’s the point in producing an ergonomic pencil, with wood and glue and stickers and then transporting it to the user so that it is then shoved into a printer… might as well just have a print cartridge with graphite in it…
mif991 says
But I use a lot of pencils and innevitably I throw away the stubs. This is where this design comes in. Great concept, if the printing is sufficiently clear.
dave says
I agree. I’d like to see what the print looks like…
Marin says
Probably graphite only (without the wood cover of the pencil) will be even more ECO. I love the concept and i would love to see it working.

AMAZING….
Igor Pismensky says
GREAT IDEA. I have suggestion ….. first of all use graphite tubes instead of pencils. Second have a switch will go between the graphic bar and pencil for when you run out of bars. May not even need a switch.
Igor Pismensky says
Duh, only read the first post about removing wood from pencil before I posted my first comment. YA great way to use stubs of pencils that are to small to write with.

Awesome. A release date ?

drives me nuts when people dont explain things in coherent English.
cool concept… but its method for handling carbon, wood, and eraser remains is inefficient, and lacks any clear description as to how the ‘lead’ and wood are separated. How would you make a mistake if the printer prints what you have on the screen? to many questions. Seems like a concept taken right of out a product design class.
Why does every one freaking ask ‘When will this be available’ EARTH TO CAPTAIN OBVIOUS _CONCEPT ART CREATED BY STUDENTS_ If you can understand what exactly the artists says it does, good be job having you! It will never be available…
mif991 says
I am sorry, I couldn’t understand the last sentence…could you be a little bit more coherent?
Fel says
Why are you such a fkn hater? don’t u have anything better to do? Its a great product.
Hope you die
Alex says
Wow. Way to be just the kind of ass you think he is.
Personally, I can’t quite get the full gist of what this thing is for because of the English. It’s part of professionalism that you need to get your project boards proof-read before publishing. But from what I can pick up, I don’t think I’d be dumping my current inkjet printer any time soon. Using just stubs of pencils, I think I’d be switching stubs every 2 seconds given how far I grind them down to begin with.
Tim says
Um…
“drives me nuts when people dont explain things in coherent English.”
“to many questions.” should be “too many questions”
“taken right of out a product design class”
Switch the “out” and “of”
“good be job having you!”
I don’t even know what the hell this on is supposed to be.
It drives me nuts when people don’t use coherent english!
yoyo says
haha
you know what
this is the only post i can totally understand
laura rein says
the way it works is clearly stated. also, any mistakes YOU, the PERSON makes, not the printer. if any mistakes are made you can feed the paper back through and it will erase it and you can fill it back in to fix it.
maybe you should read the description again. and again. and again. until you actually understand.
maybe its not the author who’s unclear; maybe you just are incompetent.
sticker design says
Great idea.
Mr.Q says
But in order to print, I have to buy pencils and erasers to use and this machine. I need to pay too much money and will make much more waste. So, I think this is not very useful. sorry~
mif991 says
Mr. Q., I do buy and use thousands of pencils and throw away the stubs, it would be useful for people like me. Your point is that it is for a limited market, and that is true.
Jyn says
Hm. It sounds like a great idea conceptually but the mechanics of it still sounds faulty to me.
Firstly is the technology. I know no technology that enables the use of printing with lead, will the idea be similar to heat transfer?
Second is the idea of printer erasing. The diagram shows us how it will be done but have they erased a paper before? How easily does the debris remove itself? It doesn’t drop easily, I find myself having to wipe it down.
Third is the use of lead, actually. Ground up lead you say? I would like to know the type of receptacle used to contain it and how it will be used to gather enough ‘ink’ to print.
Lovely presentation, a bit more information and proof of research is a preference that way my mind is assuaged that it is a sound/achievable concept.
Mr. Dynasty says
“I know no technology that enables the use of printing with lead…”
How about, say, a hand?

Or a plotter.

These conceptual designs always look a hundred times cooler than any actual product. It’s just a shame coolness often coincides with impracticality: a printer that curves upward would be absurd.

The impossible
K.L.S says
I think that’s really cool. And I would definitely feel better about printing if it’s just using my useless old pencils. Awesome idea.
ADD says
Great Idea..
Graphite printing..WOW
Good for onetime use docs/ref.docs.
But not very convinced with the idea of erasing it.
ca says
hmmm..
nice design, but i wonder about following aspects:
1) why burn the wood and dont use the ashes as ink-dust, too?
2) eraser as an follow up product to keep people buying, like printer-ink?
3) one paper manually put into printer? no follow up papers? just a concept of a single sheet printing, erasing, printing circle?
4) other aspects as mentioned in posts. mechanical basics of dust falling and keeping in cartridges and…
super simple idea, may be useful also for people with children and need of text-priters.
no, drawing material isnt in concept, even burned…
Mr. Cool says
People do some research! you may lean some thing, like I don’t know…trees are a renewable resource so there is no reason to save one, most out oxygen comes from the oceans’ vegetation.
oh and wood and led plus electrical heat equals fire!
Mr. Cool is a homo says
you might be retarted
david says
Yeah Mr.Cool!
The rest of you, it is a simple design because IT DOESN’T WORK. This is dumb and if it were real would never sell enough at market. Maybe a neat novelty but eraser dust? Burning wood? to separate? Was the metal eraser part addressed? There is no cord so I will assume it uses the metal to power itself through a molten process. Oh, and by the way we have had pen and pencil plotters since, what the 50′s?
ethered says
This is a stupid idea
Hashim says
Instead of wooden pencil why not just use graphite leads which we have in stationary for those pen like looking pencils I don’t know their names but they look like pen and we can fill them with leads. Anyway the idea does look good but needs lots of improvement.
Absurdyum says
Saving trees?
how do you think Pencils are made?
damn….
BCDesigns says
I think the artist is referring to the fact that less paper will be used because it is erasable, and you can reuse the same sheet multiple times, thus saving trees.

PAVAN KUMAR says

Stephanie says
How innovative. This is a great idea for recycling and less waste considering the weekly amount of pencil stubs my children bring home from school. Seems to me a “must have”.
Moogy says
@ Mr. Cool
Yes, trees and forests may certainly be renewable, but not with the rate that we’re currently using them. Ethical reasons aside, there are practical reasons for conservation of forests, such as potential medicinal chemicals that we have yet to discover.
The printer itself seems like an interesting concept, but if it’s mainly used for pencil stubs, I can’t imagine that it’ll get much mileage for each stub – especially since people probably don’t run through new pencils quickly enough for it to use only the graphite. I prefer mechanical pencils though, so I can’t be a fair judge for that. Perhaps a backup system using ink could fit in there somewhere.
The eraser system seems rather superfluous, given that most people would prefer their things to be printed out on a clean, crisp sheet of paper. A lot of paper gets wrinkled, bent, and all sorts of other things; the printer eraser isn’t likely to be much better than the erasers I’m using manually, and even those still leave some marks.
Overall, interesting concept, but more or less completely impractical.
BestofStumbleupon says

So… this can be implemented with a plotter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plotter
Those have been around for years and you can small ones pretty cheap or make them. There’s even well developed open source software to run them.
This is just a new spin on an old idea.
nick says
So… this isn’t really a new concept at all.
Plotters have been around for ages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plotter
The way I see it, that’s all this really is – except this proposes a process of removing graphite from a stub pencil which wont be cost effective.
There are plotters around that are designed to work with pencils. You can even make one yourself if you want with a couple of stepper motors to accurately control the x and y axes and you’d only need a solenoid or servo to drop the tip of the pencil/pen. There is even well developed open source software for this sort of thing.
Just a new ‘green’ spin on an old idea.
nick says
This is involved, but there are other videos floating around with plotters made from legos.

It looks awesome, and it looks cool. The concept is interesting. But the fact that you use pencils, while better than ink cartridges, seems like only a temporary solution. Also this would really only be for home use right? Thumbs up for the design though!

This site always has designs that are obviously by art students who have no idea how or even if their product would work
They just make something pretty looking and everybody goes "coo thats AMAZING why aren't they everywhere?"
BECAUSE THEY ARE IMPRACTICAL IN REAL LIFE
and to add insult to injury they tend to slap the word "green" on there and just SAY it would save energy or could be recycled, without actually working out if things are feasible.
Sorry to say it but these designs are invariably by someone Chinese with a very poor grasp of the English language. God help us if the future designers of the world want to make this shiny iPod crap rather than something useful or clever

I love the concept! Though, there should be an *option* for using a graphite cartridge instead of needing a pencil every time. I would use this at all times if I could.
imachrismoose says
I agree. And this design also lacks a paper tray. I wouldn’t want to have to feed paper into it every time I wanted to print something.

It would be much better if it recuperated eraser shavings and reused them to erase again! this way wastes eraser instead of paper :/ still not perfect xP

Guilherme Cahú says
So, will this great idea be brought to life?
Andre says
Interesting idea but I wonder how one plans to make the graphite stick to the paper. By electrostatic force and heat like with toner, it won’t work I guess. By inkjet printing? It would need a carrier, some sort of fluid. And expecting that the graphite sticks to the surface after the solution has dried would be another problem.
And instead of wasting a pencil (and wood), one could simply buy graphite in powder or fill the printer with a solid block of graphite that would be grinded by the machine.
Stevemann13 says
Neat idea. But ill go thru so many pencils it will be cheaper to buy ink cartridges.
Juan Santos says

i would love this if it ever was made. the concept is well done, of course from a logical point there are some issues but nonetheless it is a nice idea. let me just point out that there is this thing that a lot of people have never heard of or have ever used, it’s call a carbon paper typewriter…now i know that it’s not exactly cutting edge but, back in the day, all you needed was to type directly into this magic machine exactly what you wanted and it would use carbon paper to(get this)print onto paper using graphite and was in fact eraseable. the downside, having to purchase carbon paper. sadly this is practically extinct and is only used by us old folks, such a shame…
babysgramma says

Excellent idea but… lead?! Lead pencils are made of graphite, not lead.
And it needs to be sure if wood can be burned easily and safely. This idea must be polished, but I think its a very good concept. Congratulations!

asdf says
1) the ashes is a different form of carbon and doesn’t print as well as graphite
2) People buy erasers all the time
3) There has to be some storage space, say, below the printer or an attachment. It’s useful for erasing previous documents.
4) Some erasers don’t have as much dust, define “keeping in cartriges”.
Cobra Inks says
What a great concept! – I’m sure this would prove incredibly popular. Would love to hear more if it comes into development.

So what happens if the pencil needs sharpening does the printer sharpen it? Also, what happen if you put a pen in it so it looks better than pencil?
Hilary says
Seems like a good idea in theory, but I don’t think it will save anything. I don’t print anything unless I need to, and with the intention to keep it. It seems about a green as the water-dissolvable cell phone. Kind of a bad idea.
