  • This is the first and only selfie people will probably ever see from me here (grawr I haaaaaate taking pics and also my faec), but I’m doing it for a very simple reason: I finally cut off my dreadslocks!
Look, fellow white people with dreadlocks, I get it, I do. I had my hair in dreadlocks for… seven years. They started near my ears and grew all the way down to my butt. We then cut them to around my chin and they grew to a little past my shoulder before they were cut this past weekend. That’s seven long years of cultural appropriation. A little more than six of which I didn’t even know they were appropriation. Yeah, I grew attached to them. I liked the way I looked in them. Finally I was happy with my hair (I have several cowlicks I hate dealing with). Even people who didn’t know me would stop me and tell me “that’s just so you” echoing the sentiments of people I was close to. I like to think they were clean (yes, I shampooed mine and washed them regularly), but they were still appropriation. It was forcing my hair into a style that isn’t natural to it while ignorant of the roots and history of locs. Heck, I even started off in the typically disgusting way: my friend did one with glue in my hair.
I cut off my locs; you can, too. Do the right thing today.
