Where do the United States & European Union get their Natural Gas? (x-post /r/dataisbeautiful) by bruces_axein europe

[–]kingofstrawe 0 ポイント1 ポイント

That's a stretch. There are places in the US with practically no difference summer and winter like in California, and there are places in Europe that change drastically. The real reason is energy efficiency is just not the same priority in the USA because resources are cheaper and the culture likes big more than in Europe. Just look at size of cars. Homes even in the wealthy EU countries are not guaranteed to have climatization. In the US, 85 degree weather is enough to start cooling the house and the homes are generally bigger and people don't use opening windows to deal with the heat.

Didn't say they were the same level, just that they split with one side going anti-West the other side embracing the West.

They didn't have any winning choices. Now they should just consolidate West and South Ukraine and let the east go the dark side like E. Germany and N. Korea, whose counterparts looked pretty good after a couple decades. They'd also get the benefit of being the West's little project and getting Marshall Plan-level assistance which'll be feasible since it's not that big of a country.

Concern Grows Over Rise of Asian Buddhist Fundamentalism by FrogmanJonesin worldnews

[–]kingofstrawe 1 ポイント2 ポイント

as in the case with any fundamentalists, there's some ignorance/distortion about what their religion actually teaches

I would say that some violent fundamentalists, while ignorant, are actually following their founders' actions and words without needing much distortion.

After you assassinate two heads of state and most of the world ignores it for the sake of reconciliation, you probably dont feel too worried about assassinating some little opposition.

Ukraine says Odessa unrest planned and financed from abroad by jaywalker32in worldnews

[–]kingofstrawe 9 ポイント10 ポイント

I think the issue was, Crimea had a stronger claim to joining Russia and was high in Russian interests because of the port. Russian citizens in east Ukraine saw this and thought they had a real chance at joining Russia, which has always been some latent desire. Recently listening to some NPR show interview some Ukrainians, the pro-Russian basically just wanted the Russian pensions they think Crimeans will be collecting and didn't conceal it.

Kremlin says it is weighing response to ‘thousands’ of pleas for help from Ukraine by [deleted]in worldnews

The pretenses for separatists were always bogus. All their talk of being oppressed by the temporary government was just self-fulfilling prophecy. They've been rattling their sabres for a month against an entity that didn't really want to deal with them and now they are shocked when they actually respond.

Two Ukrainian Helicopters Shot Down by Pro-Russian Forces by FlowersOfSodomin worldnews

[–]kingofstrawe 2 ポイント3 ポイント

Honestly it might be time for W. Ukraine to just do its own thing if so many people in the east are neutral or negative towards moving on towards EU vs joining with Russia. I watched the latest Vice video and it look like Donetsk should just be written off, the people on the street just want to be part of Russia.

It boggles my mind that people would rather cling on to a kleptocratic dictatorship than move towards a bureaucratic institution that for all its flaws contains most of the highest living standard countries and the most transparent governments in the world. You can say what you want about the evil banking cabals/Western spying/etc. but still noone has had more competent and internally tolerant governments than the ones in the EU and West.

Ukraine Unveils Reform Program with IMF Support by liveconoin worldnews

West spreads its bloodsucking tentacles over its next victim. Pretty soon Ukraine will be another cookiecutter Euro failed state like Spain and France filled with annoying bureaucrats instead of strong macho leaders with an independent spirit.
