Anonymous asked: “ Its pretty sad that someone who studies ancient mediterranean appreciates medievalpoc. That shitty blog simply erases euromediterranean peoples claiming that any not blonde-blue eyed person in european art is a person of color. I mean it really gets ridicolous, Its like if they dont recognize greeks or southern italians exist. Their americanocentric white people vs poc mindset should be loathed, not appreciated. ”

ahaaaa dude do you not think that there are enough places in the world for you to find artistic representation of white people??

you may have noticed that medievalpoc is a blog on the internet whilst the Renaissance was a massive artistic movement drawing heavily from the Classical Greek and Roman periods and glorifying dark haired white people (i.e. the very demographic of ‘euromediterranean peoples’ you are bringing up) even when the subjects they are portraying were never intended to be white*

and wait!!! there are many more western art movements with images of white people for you to peruse!!!! why don’t you start by looking in literally any major art gallery!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not sad that a student of ancient history and art appreciates a resource for greater diversity in her research. tbh it’s not even very noteworthy.

This anon ask is kind of….fascinating, like a really gross looking insect.

I’m also really sorry that these kind of asks are making their way into the inboxes of my followers…now that’s just rude.

I’m baffled by accusation that I “erase” Mediterranean people…this Anon seems to be very upset that I would group brown-skinned Europeans with Europeans of African descent (as if these groups are necessarily separate?) under the umbrella term “People of Color”.

I mean, I’m pretty sure anyone who’s paying attention has noticed that I am quite aware Southern Italians exist; I recently did an entire series on Southern Italian artist and fabulous eccentric Il Sodoma:

Anon up there seems to have a big, juicy problem with me claiming this artist as a person of color.

But maybe what Anon does not understand is that their fatuous opinion changes absolutely nothing about the lack of inclusion of brown-skinned artists and art subjects in Eurocentric American Art History Education.

My followers today are the Educators of tomorrow. The newest generation of Americans are going to irrevocable change American demographics, and I will not stand by and witness them being indoctrinated with a white supremacist education.

White supremacy in education is a form of social violence. You only have to look through the many, many messages I’ve received from students who were outright told by their teachers and professors that they have no history, they have no place in art, that they could only be slaves, oppressed people, victims of genocide and defined in relation to European Colonialism. How many textbooks begin with “First Contact”? How many textbooks try to put a “positive spin” on chattel slavery??? How many colleges are preemptively banning “Ethnic Studies” Departments?

How is divorcing a people from their history not violence?

The bottom line is, there are many people in power in the United States doing their utmost to make sure these students never see a face that looks like theirs in the past, in power, in context, or at all. Because they know the psychological effects this has on youth and their sense of self-esteem and empowerment.

My “shitty blog” is doing its best to mitigate or do some damage control on the perpetuation of these crimes done in the name of Education.

ok first of all Il Sodoma was not a southern italian, he was born and raised in Vercelli (fun fact:sodoma is actually a idiom in piemontese dialect so’doma=wake up) that is a city up in the north, he studied in Milan, that is a city in the north and lived and worked in both Siena and Rome, cities in the centre of Italy, just saying.

Second, no i’m sorry but this is wrong, if you think that southern italians are not white just because their skin is darker than idk a norwegian i’m gonna laugh, why the fuck you americans think you have the right to judge the race of an entire popolation? You are basically saying to people that have considered themselves white for centuries that they are not because of your fucking americacentric view, seriously? i didn’t know that i wasn’t white untill i read it on tumblr, can you imagine it??lol

i usually read here on tumblr that southitalians are not white because of the arabs occupation, i just can’t, so what? south italy was occupied by the normanns too, there are actually many blondes with blue eyes in south italy, are they white?do all of us have to look like fucking nazis to be considered pure white people to you???

I also find extremely funny (not related directly to you) how we changed from being poc to being white when you need it, let’s make an exemple, let’s take the spanish people, they are south europeans therefore pocs to your fuckedup logic but fuck if tumblr hate the white supremacist imperialist spanish empire, so now tell me when was the exact moment the spanish stopped being white and started being pocs? when did it happened to us italians?i’m really curious about it.

I like your blog, i really do, but i think that at least you should care for what WE have to say on the matter of what OUR race is, and you have to understand that having an olive skin color doesn’t make us poc.

one more time?

But maybe what Anon irefiordiligi  does not understand is that their fatuous opinion European racial categories change absolutely nothing about the lack of inclusion of brown-skinned artists and art subjects in Eurocentric American Art History Education.

Go ahead and be as white as you wanna be, bro. Which is apparently, very, very white. No one can stop you. No one can tarnish your pure whiteness, as white as the very driven snow. Enjoy Il Sodoma’s whiteness, straightness, and super Northern in-no-way-a-person-of-color whateverness.

I’ll be over here having an art history and historiography blog.

AHAHAHAHAHAHH OMG YOU AREN’T ONLY EXTREMELY ARROGANT YOU’R ALSO STUPID AS WELL

""But maybe what Anon irefiordiligi  does not understand is that their fatuous opinion European racial categories change absolutely nothing about the lack of inclusion of brown-skinned artists and art subjects in Eurocentric American Art History Education.”“

now please tell me where i say that pocs have never existed in european art? I just say that southern italians, who mostly have OLIVE skin tone, do not belong to the “umbrella term “People of Color”. THAT’S ALL

how is that black people came in many shades but white do not? a nigerian has a very dark skin, an eritrean otherwhise has a much lighter skin, by your logic an eritrean should be considered something else?cambodian people are darker than japanese but that doesn’t make them a different race!!so why is it so difficult for you to understand that white people may have different tone of skin colors too??

you know, i have a very pale skin, both my parents have very pale skins but my brother came out with a strong olive skin tone, if you would see him in a paint you would probably called him poc because he’s darker than me, but guess what????HE’S NOT, BECAUSE, AND I WILL NEVER BE TIRED OF SAYING IT, HAVING OLIVE SKIN DOESN’T MAKE US POC

this is a picture of me and my friends, half of us are 100% from north italy the other half is from the south, now tell me who of us is from the south, come on tell me!since you seem to understand MY race and MY people better than I do!

""Go ahead and be as white as you wanna be, bro. Which is apparently, very, very white. No one can stop you. No one can tarnish your pure whiteness, as white as the very driven snow.

HOLY SHIT how can you be so arrogant?who the fuck you think you are??you accuse me of eurocentrism and don’t even understand how much american-centric you are, jesus christ i’m seriously laughing at your stupid american ass. Listen i don’t know what kind of fucked up STEREOTYPED idea do you people in the states have about Italy, about Spain, about Greece, about Portugal or about any other countries in Europe that doesn’t fit under your “umbrella”, the only thing that i have understand about americans is that apparently to be considered white one does have to be tall, blonde and with blues eyes, ok whatever. But you just can’t tell me that i’m not what i am after i have been looking at my face in the mirror every days for 23 years and see a white girl because you so disperately what us to be pocs. And you do, you are so focused on finding pocs in european art (thing that i like, that’s why i said that i like your blog) that you are mystifying the reality.

""Enjoy Il Sodoma’s whiteness, straightness, and super Northern in-no-way-a-person-of-color whateverness.""

AHAHAHAHAHA HERE THE FUNNIEST THING!!!

The picture you posted of Il Sodoma has been changed, did you make it darker on purpose?? this is what the original paint looks like

image

image

the second picture is said to be Sodoma, do you know what i see?i see a white guy with probably an olive skin tone, HOLY SHIT HE MUST BE A POC BECAUSE I’M AMERICAN AND I HAVE BEEN TAUGHT THAT WE AMERICANS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT AND  WHAT I THINK IS LAW AND DOESN’T MATTER WHAT NATIVE ITALIANS SAY, I WONT LISTEN TO THEM TALKING ABOUT THEMSELVES BECAUSE I WANT THEM TO BE POCS SO THEY ARE.

""super Northern"" are you idiot? he was born in fucking Vercelli!!!!!!!!!!!! How could you even think for a second that he was from the south???couldn’t you like idk read his biography and look at a map before posting??

WELL THAT’S REALLY LOOKS LIKE SOUTH ITALY.

It really unnerves me when i read stupid, bullshit, false things, expecially when said things concerns me, my people, my country, so you better understand the reality, take your head out of your ass and listen to us.

funny how you didn’t comment anything of what i wrote in the previous post, isn’t it?

Again, i’m not criticizing your blog, i like what you are doing, you are giving visibility to all the nonwhites that lived in europe, good, that’s great but do not get confused on who is really a poc and who is not.
