The Pacific nation of the Marshall Islands is suing all nine nuclear-armed states for what it says is their flagrant violation of international law. It accuses them of failing to pursue the disarmament negotiations stipulated under the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. All nine are being pursued through the International Court of Justice , and the United States is also being sued in an American court. The US tested almost seventy nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands after the Second World War, exposing thousands of residents to radioactive fallout and causing serious environmental contamination.
