I always hear this argument and have read various interpretations of the 2nd amendment... but shouldn't tanks and missiles be legal under this reasoning. What could an assault rifle possibly do against military-level weapons?

Well, I think it's foolish to assume the military would unite against us. A more likely scenario is that part of the military breaks off and forms the rebellion along with the armed citizens.

There is a country called Afghanistan, maybe you've heard of it? Well, those poor folks over there have held off two world superpowers, primarily with AK-47s and some improvised explosives.

But seriously, if the shit hits the fan you should expect a large portion of the active duty military to defect to be with their families and home areas. Also expect most midwestern national guards to be activated to defend their states (the whole point of those anyway). Combine that with the estimated 300 million firearms in the US (a conservative guess), and we win. Simple as that.

You also have to consider the geography of Afghanistan which makes it terribly hard to invade or control. Totally different situation

And there's also the fact that radical Islamists are so dedicated to their ideology that they're willing to blow themselves up to accomplish even the slightest strategic goal. No offense, but I don't think that many of us Americans have that sort of dedication to anything. I mean, with how much we complain about our government, you'd think we were really serious about our grievances, but one look at the voter turnout over the past decade (roughly 50%) suggests that we're mostly just whiny bitches (at least compared to terrorists in the Middle East).

Don't get me wrong, I think Americans have plenty of legitimate concerns, and most of our complaints against the government are justified, but when push comes to shove I have to assume that most Americans would much sooner roll over and take our government's bullshit than stage an actual revolution and risk missing their favorite TV show.

Someone has never been to the Rockies, the Appalachians, or even the Ozarks. The US is still plenty wild and wooly in these places, and the people that live there would put up a hell of a fight.

    The US doesn't have the guts, and Putin knows it. That's why he's acting like a dick to everyone over there. If it's really us against them, yeah, the conservatives will have to lead the charge. Obama and those like him are too spineless to accomplish anything significant militarily. However, if it's us against us, they wouldn't stand a chance and they know it. Instead they settle for slowly eroding our rights and brainwashing people into gov't dependence. The people in CA and NY would be helpless, but there is no way that the gov't could initiate martial law on it's own people without loosing.

    It's easy to think that way, but remember, a national government cannot survive long-term without a stable civilian population (taxes, economy, etc), and if a good percentage of those civilians already own guns, and the rest are angry and fed-up enough to get their own, the government would have to start fighting and killing its own people. Besides that, don't forget a sizable portion of the military personnel would probably choose to defect and defend their own home states/towns. So now the government is fighting an armed and angry mixture of civilians and ex-military, and they can't just kill us because the government would fall apart without us.

    And that's why we have the 2nd Amendment.

    TL;DR Government can't kill too many of its own people because of the need for self-preservation, tanks/jets/big bombs are rendered useless.
