How does basically going “I’m 98% certain I have this disorder, but I can’t get diagnosed right now” trivialize mental illness? I literally can’t think of a single reason of how it could. Maybe it makes doctors seem less important. Like, if people can diagnose themselves and then just go to a doctor to basically be told “Yes, you were right” or “You were close, but you actually have this” then I guess maybe that might make them look less important maybe except not really. I mean when I go to get diagnosed and the doctor tells me I was right or I was close, it’s not going to change the fact that I was the one who noticed that I might have a disorder. We may not be 100% qualified to diagnose ourselves, but we’re at least qualified enough to realize that something is wrong and after a lot of research make at least a ball park guess to go with until we can get diagnosed. It’s not like we can get any medication without an official diagnosis, so we’re not hurting ourselves by doing so. So yeah, how the heck does self-diagnosing trivialize mental illness?
