"You hate poor people"

Or...maybe I just think that giving people free stuff will only exacerbate the problem and not turn them into contributing members of society.

Why can't we have an intelligent discussion on this?

If we could intelligently debate problems we probably wouldn't keep electing sociopaths.

Have you tried? I'm a liberal. We can have an intelligent discussion on this if you want, as long as we're both polite to each other.

I know, if we just raise minimum wage that'll knock off so many welfare leeches.

Being a liberal I have to generally agree with this quote. At events it's always interesting to see the upper middle class guys in moderately expensive shirts talking about all the things that could be done. I always found it strange the things people say when they feel everyone around them supports their general platform. The ideas build on one another, someone says something and another goes, "RIGHT!?!? THEN WE COULD DO (insert something that really doesn't matter..)" and everyone ooooooh's and ahhhhh's at the thought of helping people.

I truly appreciate intelligent conversations with conservatives and at the end of the day we agree on a lot of overall aspects. A lot of liberals (like most people) just can't communicate. When you argue against someones inherent values and beliefs they get very defensive....it's a long process but it's worth a try.

I also have a lot of liberal beliefs - I have a lot of conservative ones too, but this is my experience exactly.

A lot of it is just useless talk and the blame for inaction is placed on those who disagree. with the measures. There is also a belief that it is always someone elses responsibility to do these things - the government usually.

I'm not sure if this is liberalism, or a school system that just indoctrinates people and doesn't teach them to think for themselves.

Almost everyone thinks that way

Nonsense. When liberals disagree with conservative political solutions, I almost always simply assume they disagree because they see things differently (usually because their hearts are bigger than their brains, but that's a different discussion...).

Oh, the irony.

I recommend the book "The Righteous Mind", written by a self identified liberal, he goes into this issue, and sadly it isn't everyone who thinks this way. All political idealists do, regardless of where they stand, but beyond that it seems to be a key element of the left, and not the right.

Because all liberals think the same...

Yeah, incorrectly. Otherwise they'd be conservative. huehuehue

I think it's safe to say that no one really cares about anyone but themself, conservative or liberal. Furthermore, if you truly believe voting a certain way is actually going to help you or a group in need you need to wake up and realize that it's true what they say, 'be the change you want to see in the world'. Personally, I believe there are a set of utilities the government owes the people (not corporations, corporations are NOT people) existing within its borders, but anything extra should be left to individuals and their community.
