What does this even mean?
Seriously, if minorities "had" equal rights we wouldn't need laws ensuring they be treated equally and nobody gets "special" rights, that's just stupid... excepting the uber wealthy, all of their rights are special.
So the fact that I know seven black people with similar family income to mine to have full-rides to college while I got better grades and don't even get half isn't "special?"
I don't doubt this has happened, but there are probably some extenuating circumstances. Are they going to the same college as you? Are the scholarships offered by the college, or offered by an organization or individual? Are the individuals going into fields in which black people are historically and currently underrepresented?
Additionally, even if the answers the the above are "Yes, the college, and no," (which I'm betting is not the case) that's not "special rights." That may be special treatment, which you could claim is racism, but it's certainly not a legal requirement that these individuals receive this treatment. Thus, no special rights.

TIL: Affirmative action never existed.
"Affirmative action or positive discrimination[1] (known as employment equity in Canada, reservation in India, and positive action in the UK) is the policy of providing special opportunities for, and favoring members of, a disadvantaged group who suffer from discrimination."
Oh great, more "I did the bare minimum and now I didn't get into the college I wanted, it must have been because I'm white" posts.
Yep, and then they carry that perceived slight with them into their adult years, and that's how racism carries on.
It may be special but it's not "special rights".
Dude, no black person from your average neighborhood is going to ever cede this point. Thei believe they are entitled to it. It's ridiculous, like what about all the minorities in China. Ffs.

Everything you just wrote, is somehow just wrong. It's almost as if you sat down and typed this blurb out on a computer in a parallel world. Where everything you said almost made sense...

Not a lot of people getting my sense of humor... just trying to match OP's elegant argument skills.

My point is that in most cases, affirmative action does help to ensure equality.
But, not all minority families are poor and underprivileged, and many times a person of majority race/sex are passed over for employment or educational opportunities when in reality they are more deserving/more qualified for the position.
This isn't always the case. No, you aren't more deserving because you are white. But if you work harder for something, or do that thing better than someone else, you are more deserving of obtaining that goal
Source on white people being passed over when they are more deserving?
A source isn't needed, because that's pretty much the foundation of affirmative action. Not quite, but almost.
To keep an environment more racially diverse, two applicants of equal qualification, one race of majority the other a minority, the minority will often get the position.
Check one of my other comments in this thread, my father was passed over for a job he was perfectly qualified for to a minority applicant who not only did terribly on a pre-employment exam, but had almost ne experience in the field where my father had done the job his entire life. (Construction management)
So no source? Affirmative action is about equal candidates so no white people being passed over. White people also make up the vast majorly of the workforce, go to universities, hell white people even get sentences less to prison. So seems like they have the special rights
You can't take it on general sentiment.
I haven't once said that minorities are in general given special rights. In some cases, yes. In more cases the opposite is true.
If you find my second statement to be untrue, then you don't understand how affirmative action works. That is exactly how it seeks to promote equal treatment for minorities. I have said it is a necessary evil because people treat minorities unequally, but my point is that it also causes harm and isn't all warm and fuzzy and great. It would obviously be far more ideal if people actually treated minorities equally, and so until that happens (it won't) we are stuck with a system that can easily screw a more qualified candidate out of a position because they are the race of majority
"More deserving" in what way? Scored a few points higher on the SAT, or had double the score?
I hear this all the time, but never with specifics.
People bring this argument up all the time but I have yet to hear anyone cite a situation that an under qualified minority got the job of someone better than them based entirely on their race or gender .
It always sounds as if it's an attempt justify why you didn't get the job... Maybe they didn't like you, maybe your salary requirements were to high and they could save 10k by hiring someone slightly less qualified, maybe skills aren't enough and they also want to see interest and aptitude that will be needed for the work.
There are too many variables to know why someone doesn't get the job...
I know there are cases where an employer who has govt work has to meet a quota to satisfy it's contracts but that's a whole different issue because it has more to do with employers who already have a heavily skewed work force and/or a limited pool of employee options.
Or it's the same issue but I still the mythical "been passed up for a minority because of Affirmative Action" argument never seems to manifest any evidence.
I posted an account, and it was not me it was my father.
After being denied in favor of an under qualified minority, he got the job after a new position opened up. And he's now the lady's boss.
So he was overqualified for the position he applied for?
No, it was about a year before he was promoted.
To elaborate:
The position was a construction manager overseeing the construction of new Wal-Mart stores. He has been a self-employed contractor and home inspector for the majority of his working career. He was perfectly qualified for the position, aced the pre-employment test. The lady who got the job in place of him had a background in clerical work at a construction company, with no actual construction experience and she nearly failed the test.
The job is ensuring construction contractors do quality work, and build according to blueprints. Something the lady had no experience with
So, tell me more or tell me where I can read more...
This employer had to fill a quota? Was this govt work? Was she a new hire or promoted from within? Was their work force 75% white men? Did she take less pay?
Like I said there are a lot of variables unless your father heard specifically that he was passed over for being a white male which sounds like more the employers fault rather than Affirmative Action...
I don't man, minorities are seriously underrepresented in a lot of fields and underrepresented in Terms in proportion of percentage of the demographic so my heart doesn't really bleed over the whole issue.
There's never a way to be certain in these situations. If a minority is fired due to racism, unless their boss is firing with overt racist statements you aren't going to be getting solid proof.
How many professional interviews have you been in where they told you all about why they weren't hiring you, who they were hiring in place of you, and why? He found this information out after he became her boss and had access to her information.
This doesn't make it certain, but it's not absurd to believe that such a policy like affirmative action could have negative consequences. That's why quotas were outlawed by the supreme court. Why several states have decided not to use it.
The net benefit is positive, but it can very easily lead to negative situations. But say the work place was primarily white men, that is not necessarily indicative of anything. Those white men may have been more qualified than any other applicants, and so then to further deny a well qualified applicant because of race is morally wrong, but it must be done out of fear of legal consequences.
