In the wild there's a sub species of wombats known as "Blue waffles". They get this name because they have been living around a lake that has an extremely high alkaline content which bleaches their fur and turns it an almost blue and blonde waffle pattern.

The male of the species generally reaches breeding age by 6 months and due to their environment, has a lifespan of only 3-4 years instead of 5-15 years as a normal wombat. Females live slightly longer but spend more time away from the water then males due to digging their dens a few minutes away from the water to protect their off-spring.

An unusual trait developed by these Blue Waffles is that they mate differently than other species of wombats. Instead of seeking the best mate, a female will seek all mates, as the high alkaline content of the water reduces up to 70% of the males sterile.
