Maybe a mod is Pendragon...

Jokes aside, this isn't good for the health of the community or Dota 2. Banning the best, most prolific content creators and service providers will only force people elsewhere for easy to digest and sortable content, and this subreddit is regularly read by Valve expressly for that purpose. If content and feedback becomes more fragmented to remote islands of entertainment then the value of /r/dota2 decreases to the community and to the people at valve, making our voices harder to hear when it needs to be.

/r/dota2 truly is a one stop shop for all things Dota 2, there has to be a better way to encourage certain behaviors instead of the ban hammer.

Mali, Cyborgmatt, and Neil all banned, it's like they're literally trying to kill content going into the subreddit. I'm honestly upset by this, whenever I saw a post from any of them I knew that I would be seeing good, interesting content. Some of the articles by Mali and Neil along with the analysis from Matt is probably among the reasons why I frequent the sub in the first place, to be honest.

Seriously. Thank you, Reddit admins, for ensuring the subreddit can consist of nothing but artwork, cosplay, "Look what my girlfriend made," reaction threads to matches, and eSports drama/fluff (without any reliable sources/half decent reporting allowed). Despite 141k subscribers, the Subreddit's been in an amazing state all things considered thanks to these content providers, though I'm not sure it will be after this....

Don't forget the 'VOLVO PLS FIX THIS' and 'VOLVO PLS IMPLEMENT MY SUGGESTION'. Seriously /r/dota2 is looking more and more like the suggestion thread on the dev forums

[–]Morsrael 5

Because at this point it is. People seem to get serious erections off of their tiny pointless fixes reaching the front page and being implemented.

[–]Ricwulf 1

But it ain't a bad idea to post it there. Why talk to the room with 30 people in it when you could talk to the room with 300. Publicity can do a lot.

Not as bad as /r/diablo

We have YawnGamers to save the day and maybe DC|Nails one day!

It's hard to take Cyborgmatt's calls to not antagonize reddit.

Wait that sounds like /r/leagueoflegends

Without the artwork artwork and cosplay.

I can vouch for the eSports drama and match reaction threads, though.

What about trying to hide information inside an random girlfriend gift? "Hey guys! Look what my friend got from his girlfriend! Its as 900 mb update cake on this friday" and then a site with an iframe to cyborgmatt's dota update info

It's not the mods of this subreddit banning people thought, remember that.

Sounds like someone is starting some shit. I doubt they'd ban all those people unless someone is either irrationally pissed or trolling.

Guys! Riot has bought off Reddit! I'm sure of it. Let me make an image macro to prove it and share on facebook!

[–]Asmius 1

except a number of league reddit posters have been shadowbanned as well. ongamers was a huge poster to /r/lol

gotcha. so it was BLIZZARD all along.

was actually wargaming.net, world of tanks confirmed next big esport.

We need to go deeper! This was clearly King attempting to kill off competitive PC gaming to bring more people over to Candy Crush. It's the only possible explanation.

why would ongamers post on a lots of laughter subreddit?

[–]Asmius 0

haha funny joke

[–]Hammedatha 2

They're applying the rules that have always been there, someone probably noticed Ongamers breaking them (which they did a lot), that lead them here and then Neil was collateral damage.

Nope

Slasher also got banned. Which is the oddest part, because he genuinely posts a lot of articles not written by him, from a variety of sites. I regularly enjoy the content he posts from around the web. A lot of the others I can understand from the point of view of an outsider, by slashers I cant.

Why did Cyborgmatt get banned?

Maybe OnGamers related links...

[–]The_lolness 0 ポイント1 ポイント

Of what I've heard it was only ongamers' site that was banned (might very well be wrong), so at least neil can still get his stuff posted, just not by him.

When did they banned cyborg ? And why!!! Because of techies ?

They aren't "Literally" killing it though. You mean figuratively

Actually the dictionary meaning in all large printed dictionaries was changed yesteryear. His sentence is now correct.

[–]Kalieat 11

it isn't healthy for eSports, seriously tons of staff who work in the eSports community not only in one game are shadowbanned for NO reason.

[–]Juaxo 0

Nicely said :)

Hey you know what is a good idea? Shadow banning the people that provide the best content for r/Dota2.

[–]Endless_Facepalm 9 ポイント10 ポイント

Is there any reason that he was Shadowbanned?

[–]Raivyn_Redux 7 ポイント8 ポイント

We wont know until he messages the admins and updates us all. It all really comes down to three things, voting, posting or doxing. I'd bet that he probably voted in a way that displeased the code that catches vote manipulators. A message to the admins can clear that up, usually within 24 hours.

He can also make an alt and post with that if the admins refuse to unban.

[–]Endless_Facepalm 1 ポイント2 ポイント

Don't they block from IP to prevent this?

You can request an IP change from your isp or simply use a proxy.

[–]Raivyn_Redux 7 ポイント8 ポイント

IP bans are usually reserved for the most serious offenses. As others have said, you can usually change your IP or use TOR/VPN if you know what youre doing.

Don't most people have dynamic ips?

Kinda, depends on the ISP, but dynamic IPs means that your IP might change without notice (or better said, when you disconnect and reconnect), but not necessarily all the time.

Ya but if it changes that regularly it makes ip blocks a bit pointless.

IP bans are always pointless, they're just a hindrance to stop people too lazy to circumvent them.

Depends on the ISP. All of the ISP's in my area do a 6 month to 1 year lease on their IP addresses that are assigned out to the gateways. I honestly don't know how shadow bans work 100%. If it is localized by the IP address you could get around it. I am certain they ban access by the account name and possibly the IP but even evading all of that with a new account name as soon as they found you (as the entire point would to be continue posting in whatever circles got you banned in the first place) it would simply be another shadow ban. That and some ISP's charge for IP changes. Free proxy's are painfully slow in some cases. You're far better off not getting banned in the first place.

On gamers is banned

[–]IamAlso_u_grahvity 5 ポイント6 ポイント

/r/ShadowBan mod here. Check out: http://www.reddit.com/wiki/faq#wiki_what_constitutes_spam.3F

Inside that link you'll find:

http://www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion

  • You should submit from a variety of sources (general rule of thumb is 10% or less of your links being your own site)

From what I've read so far, this may be the cause of the ban.

[–]Mahuloq 17

Which is a horrible policy. Should be regulated by the subreddits. If we see a spammer we deal with him. If we see a good content provider then we support them.

[–]IamAlso_u_grahvity 5 ポイント6 ポイント

I totally agree but it's there to encourage people to place ads that are targeted to the subreddit rather than try to get free advertising for themselves.

I understand both sides of the argument but shadowbanning a regular user is a bit extreme.

[–]Yiin 3

They do.

To play it safe, write to the moderators of the community you'd like to submit to. They'll probably appreciate the advance notice. They might also set community-specific rules that supersede the ones above. And that's okay -- that's the whole point of letting people create their own reddit communities and define what's on topic and what's spam.

[–]Yiin 2

That's definitely not a hard and fast rule.

http://www.reddit.com/wiki/faq#wiki_what_constitutes_spam.3F

Riot pays $50k per shadow ban of the best content creators of this sub to make sure it dies.

shadowbanned!

[–]Energy-Dragon 0

Well, I really like reading stuff on REDDIT: many-many different topics, interesting threads, and due to the anonymity people post a lot of quite controversial stuff, which can be pretty interesting. But you know, on good old fuckin' FACEBOOK at least you will NOT GET SHADOW-FUCKIN-BANNED!!! :-)

(I know, due to some reasons Facebook accounts can be banned too, like posting illegal content, porn, racist of hateful things and such; but it does not happen frequently, at least it never happened to any of my friends)

[–]Golnarth 50

LoL conspiracy

Actually big LoL content providers at r/lol just got shadow banned too... coincidence? I think not

[–]Ciryandor 3

Which ones? Haven't seen posts on the League subreddit about them getting the hammer.

Who got banned?

[–]Abeneezer 69

NEIL NO! We need your content on /r/DotA2.

GREAT GUYS. LETS BAN ALL CONTENT MAKERS ON SUBREDDITS.

[–]Landriff 71

Sucks that apparently by the rules content creators can't alert people of updates with official posts. IMO they deserve the karma for creating the upvote-worthy content.

That's a shit rule that needs changing.

This. What is the process to change the rule so this gets undone.

Boycott reddit I suppose. Or mass message the admins that they have actively decreased the quality of their own site by enforcing the rules to the letter.

It's a reddit-wide rule for good reason, but it really needs to have some sub-reddit clause for subs like this.

[–]Brontolith 15

I guess the people over at r/comics must be an exception.

[–]I_Hate_Reddit 5 ポイント6 ポイント

I've noticed a lot of them either rehost their own comics on imgur and post source in comments or those that don't (in /r/comics) rehost them in imgur and crosspost to /r/funny, /r/pics, etc.

Yah, I'm turning my ad-block back on now.

[–]Raivyn_Redux 54 ポイント55 ポイント

You are. :/

Message the admins here. Be polite and ask for a reason and they may get back to you. Its not unheard of to not get a response the first or second message you send. Try not to send more than one message every 24 hours but be persistent. You may have to send another message after their response to be unbanned.

Here are the rules you may or may not have broken. Also of note is that admins ban based off the reddiquette even though they aren't rules so you may have only voted on something that was 'brigaded' or linked by another thread or comment, you may have posted too many things from the same site (aka blogspam).

I wish you luck on unbanning your account and if you need any more advice feel free to respond or send me a message. Out of curiosity, if this post helps ya out, feel free to let me know.

(If you reply to this and are still shadowbanned I won't receive a notice)

this is inspired, slightly edited and informational copypasta

Edit:

HOLY SHIT THIS THREAD BLEW UP. OP please update us if you can!

Who's doing these bans?

It seems like the moderators group needs to sit down and go through these rules to make sure they're working as intended not punishing the wrong people or people unfairly.

[–]Ketta 24

It's key administrators of the entire Reddit site, not the moderators of /r/Dota2 who rely on Niel, Cyborgmatt, and others for such great content.

Then these admins need to go away and someone else take their place. Neil does an awesome job creating content and cyborg is one of the few that gets info directly from Valve when it comes to Dota2.

are you seriously asking for the administrators to abandon their own site?

[–]Pressingissues 8

Yes

There's a team that keeps this site up and it seems like some members of it don't think before they act. A lot of users on this site constantly repost stuff, talk shit, are racist, homophobic, overall break the site's "reddiquette". In short they add nothing of value. Just constantly hunt for imaginary points. It looks like nothing ever happens to users like them but when someone that actually does something useful for a small part of the comunity, he gets banned because the site's rules were broken. Spam in my book means reposting the same stuff over and over again, which a lot of lovely users do it in the default subs. These other guys ( neil and cyborg ) post fresh content, eventhough they link to their own websites.

Banning those guys accomplishes nothing.

Its people who are trying to manipulate reddit who get banned and in general this is content posting to sites with advertisements. Thats what the admins usually hunt for. Perhaps there has been some vote rigging or spam or this was a mis understanding. You cant ever ban away the shitposting.

[–]Raivyn_Redux 3 ポイント4 ポイント

Honestly the admins only seem to care about three things: how people vote, doxxing and spamming. Chances are that neil voted on a thread that was brigadded and got swept up when the ban hammer went down. Chances are he just needs to poke the admins and they'll get back to him if he's consistent and persistent like I offered in my message.

Also, I love how people from his community comes in and rallies behind him. I dont usually see much support like that and its good to know people like you all are still here. (:

It is clearly a misunderstanding because most of the content creators around dota make money out of it. And there's nothing wrong about that. People can decide for themselves what is spam and what is not, also you have a hide option for each post and boom, it's gone. Would the admins prefer that content creators make smurf accounts? Because that is indeed shady eventhough it would have the same impact.

reddiquette can be freely broken, the rules can not

Yes, true. Not exactly sure about racism or homophobia though.

Racism and homophobia are not against reddit rules unless it includes personal information, but many subreddits would probably remove such comments.

Perhaps that would be a good thing, because if administrating the site involves destroying it by banning people who help bring traffic in, they should probably fuck off for their own good.

Either that or stop doing stupid pointless shit.

You do realize the admins run the site, right? It's like you go to a friend's house and ask him to leave his house because you don't like that he asks you to take off your shoes.

I already replied to the guy bellow me. It's basicaly the same answer and yes, I realize what I'm saying.

[–]Nastrond 0

i bet someone whispered things into administrator´s ears. i think there is nothing to do.

This confirms that reddit admins play LoL.

What is happening here? Has a Mod account on the subreddit been compromised or someone playing the funny bugger?

[–]Change_Machine 6 ポイント7 ポイント

Id be happy to post stuff for you.

Here's an idea - post to team liquid or another website that actually values creation of good content.

[–]Kalfos 1

That would be good if TL wasn't such a heavy moderate site that anyone who steps out of line or even says something that offends a mod over there gets banned in a heartbeat.

[–]Aalnius 13

well i'm gonna give it about a week and if they haven't let them back im just going to give up on reddit altogether. The main reason i come on here is to keep updated fo things dc and cybormatt are doing among others and if theyre just going to be banning them all and blacklisting their sites there isn't much point n me staying here.

inb4 no one cares your only one guy

The main reason i come on here is to keep updated fo things dc and cybormatt are doing among others

If this is the case, your best bet is to visit their sites regularly yourself! Reddit is a great place to get the word out about new content, but it wasn't designed to be an advertising platform for these creators, despite their content being high quality.

if theyre just going to be banning them all and blacklisting their sites there isn't much point n me staying here.

The sites aren't blacklisted at all I believe. There is a rule of reddit that content creators can't come and post only their content here. Other people can post the links all they want I believe.

IIRC ongamers is now blacklisted

[–]Aalnius 0

i know but i'd rather not have to visit like 10 different webpages to check for content when i can find it easily on reddit and upvote because its good content.

and as far as i know they have blocked ongamers domain atleast

all things considered. "Shadowbanned" sounds like a super idea for a an RTS game. I can almost see it. DC and OG team up to deliver the best COMMUNITY DOTA 2 EXPERIENCE. "Two premium content communities team together to fight off the evil reddit overlords. Watch them find the drama and the weekly circle jerk all the while having the funniest of adventures when SunsFan and Cyborgmatt decide on who can have the last donut and Reeves being the iconic comic relief". I'd pay for this game.

Could someone tell me what a shadowban is?

You don't get told you are banned, but it makes it to where no one can see your posts or anything(outside of certain situations).

Just found this sub, what is this post all about? Why was this person banned

Fuck I hate it when admins don't just up and say when and why they banned something. Remove whichever asshead does this from the mod team. If you can't justify an action in text, it isn't justified.

[–]Cyiclo 1

Lets be honest here, Reddit admins dont want anything that doesnt take away from there fucking website here, sounds like admins are butthurt.

Why ? Did i miss something?

The reason you share the same situation as CyborgMatt is because you upload stuff for your site without contributing to the Reddit/Dota2. I asked the mods myself and they don't like it when people are spamming their content with links to everyone when they aren't taking part in the community.

Which is utter bullshit. I see CyborgMatt post in all types of threads on the Dota2 community subreddit and his biggest contribution is the content he creates.

[–]Rankre 0

They should have gotten a warning first? Simply a ban out right doesn't seem reasonable, especially since the community appreciated their work. I don't see why they should get banned like that :/ kinda bullshit

[–]Raivyn_Redux 0 ポイント1 ポイント

Warnings allow real and serious spam bots to get a heads up that they may be banned and it defeats the purpose of a shadowban: to fuck with normal users who have no idea what it is. Welcome to reddit where the reddiquette is half-assed enforced depending on which way the wind blows and the admins dont give a shit XD

[–]Tyzall 0

[–]The_Cake_Of_Dota 0 ポイント1 ポイント

So I just had a buddy get shadowbanned not but a month ago. Apparently the reasoning behind it was that he was jumping on a "vote brigade" with members of r/DotA2.

He's had a Reddit account for a good 4+ years and isn't at all the type to vote against something just because of someone posting "go vote this down" or any random thing like that.

But see, this is where I get bothered by this. Likst most of us, he visits r/DotA2 with frequency. He's also opinionated and upvotes or downvotes based off of his, well, opinion. Which is the point of Reddit.

So why are they shadow banning him for participating? Because they don't want folks to downvote? Then why have downvotes exist to begin with?

Downvotes are not for opinions, hese are not Facebook likes and the point of them is a simple contributes to the discussion or doesn't. So if you see someone honestly defending Hitler with his own arguments you ignore or answer with your own arguments, you don't try to silence by downvote.

At least that's the spirit of Reddit.

You know what is a good idea? Not breaking reddit's rules. All of them are excellent content creators but they were given rules to follow.

[–]Skjalg -1

Can people please stop down voting /u/alienth. You are supposed to down vote if a user is not contributing to the discussion, but all his posts have been on topic, informative and polite. They should be at the top as they are the most relevant here.

who are you anyway? I mean, I know who you are, just... why would they ban you, you are nobody. Did you spam this subreddit with your stuff?

yes, such precious content, retarded youtube videos and hats. my god, this is worse than the holocaust.
