As I said in the post, I was with another cyclist, practically touching, that was in no way in the driver's blind spot, and I could definitely see the cab of the truck in the very large side view mirror.

I would be dead if I did not drive defensively, but an act like this - a large truck cutting off the bike lane - is as bad if not MUCH WORSE than a cyclist running through a stop sign. The larger vehicle you have under your control, the more responsibility you have for the safety of others on the road.

Obviously the truck driver is responsible for driving in a safe way and he failed to do that here. That's going to happen. A lot.

Google the Right Hook. It's the leading cause of bicyclist deaths and it's exactly what happened here. It's not uncommon and you need to learn how to identify it and avoid it if you want to keep riding.

I'm telling you this as a fellow cyclist. Stay safe out there.

I've been riding in Boston and the surrounding environs for >10 years. I just wanted to illustrate something simple that happens every single day, all over the area, that maybe people don't realize is happening, and is leading to the deaths of cyclists. People who do this should be cited, but without the testimony of the cyclist or a witness, nobody will ever know.

I think most drivers know they're supposed to check their mirrors. I don't think most cyclists know how dangerous this situation is (as evidenced by the fact you've been riding 10 years and didn't see it).

Could you see the driver? No? Then you're in his blind spot. It's a physics thing. Kind of like how trucks are bigger than bikes and people so they kill them when they run them over.

That's not how blind spots work on trucks. They have mirrors that display all of the space alongside the truck. The driver himself admitted fault in this thread.

Yeah I have no problem with bikes at all but when people act like they're doing the universe a favor for riding a bike and everyone else on the road should somehow read their minds because they're an amazing person who rides a bike, it's annoying.
