“I’m not a feminist because I like it when men open doors for me and help me with my coat.” These are the words on one of the posters that are part of a Facebook campaign against feminism being run by the German anti-Euro party, Alternative for Germany. The campaign is called Gleichberechtigung statt Gleichmacherei, or ‘equal rights rather than egalitarianism’, and it asks its supporters to take a photo of themselves holding up signs explaining why feminism must be opposed. “I’m not a feminist because family is more important than career and I want to put an end to the madness of the sexual question.” The messages include one from the movement’s youth leader, Markus Frohnmaier, who started the campaign: “I’m not a feminist because the battle between the sexes, artificially inflated, distracts from the country’s real problems.” The idea has caused much debate: some are in agreement while others argue that sexual discrimination still exists and must be challenged.
