Worth noting that the attack he describes wouldn't work due to DOGE using a different hashing algorithm than Bitcoin (Scrypt vs. SHA256) but for me this highlights the risk of using an algorithm that you don't have the highest dedicated hashrate for.

Litecoin for example could potentially try something like this if they got a high enough hashrate advantage over us due to something like asymmetric ASIC distribution among miners.

Edit: Also I want to note that when I found this post it only had 5 upvotes. Don't confuse the actions of one guy with the entire Bitcoin community.

Yeah we don't need to worry about bitcoin, But you are right, if Litecoin miners wanted they could do terrible things to us.

[–]Nyarlathotep124 [score hidden]

How big is the power gap between us and litecoin? How long will it take us to surpass them, if we continue at our current growth rate?

[–]latusthegoatmagic shibe [score hidden]

We haven't really grown in a while, hashrate-wise, I don't think.

LTC's network looks to be about 185MH/s, so 3 times as big as dogecoin's (not counting multipools).

I have a few thoughts on this.

  1. First, and most importantly, this is ONE GUY posting under what seems like a throwaway account (granted a month old one). The rest of the posts in the thread are pretty much all calling him an idiot. He's being downvoted pretty heavily.

  2. The guy is describing a "time warp" attack, not a 51% attack. Though there seems to be evidence in the comments that he originally mentioned a 51% attack, I'm not really sure what that's all about. In any case, as other's have pointed out, BTC uses the SHA-256 algorithm, not scrypt... so we are safe from BTCers, but larger scrypt miners, such as LTC could, theoretically, pull this off.

  3. This quote from one of his replies in the thread made me laugh:

Funny- You can down vote the truth, but it won't change it. Bitcoin is based on sound mathematics, economics and game theory. Not community, or communism- which is what dodecoin sounds like. Nothing wrong with the idea of communism. It seems quite beautiful, but in practice?

He is clearly confused. It's not like our community and "communism" generate the coins. Doge is still based on the same mathematics, economics and game theory that bitcoin is. This guy, lol.

[–]Shibeliumshibe [score hidden]

Lol exactly. Since when did giving become synonymous with communism? :D

Maybe because we tip according to our ability to those according to their need. Or something. It doesn't make sense.

[–]jairo4poor shibe [score hidden]

One bitcoin follower already did, but that guy on r/Bitcoin seem to be at serious risk. You see, the "hat challenge" is a new dare game played by bitcoiners to draw attention from the news media and reddit mods.

[–]call_of_warez 0 ポイント1 ポイント

It's not that simple. The vast majority of bitcoin hash power is from ASIC's which cannot be used to mine dogecoin.

Hmm... digital currency representing digital citizens, declaring digital war. Crypto currency wars could be a thing.

Need to protect the Dogcoin communtiy, i'll look in to buying an asic when they come out.

Look at what happened to Auroracoin.

[–]The_pun_fartastrodoge 0 ポイント1 ポイント

Of all the cryptos, it would just happen to be Auroracoin too. First one to bolster a national economy and it gets hit with a 51%. Iceland just can't get a break.

[–]Nyarlathotep124 [score hidden]

I hope we do reach that point, it would be the most entertaining internet event in years. Cry havoc and let slip the doges of war!

Nothing to do with the Bitcoin community just someone making a fool of himself:

I love how BTC is declaring war, while we're rooting for them to get back on track, in order to better stabilize the crypto market.
We just want the best for all viable coins at this point.

Then we plan our attack ;)

[–]gooberdude[S] 3 ポイント4 ポイント

To be fair it's just one uninformed guy. His post wasn't very popular at all when I found it, only had like 5-7 upvotes. I doubt the majority of the Bitcoin community think like this.

Go ahead and give it a read, several people on there want to actively try to take out dogecoin.

[–]TheLobstrosityshibe 0 ポイント1 ポイント

That's refreshing.
I honestly don't know much about the BTC crowd, other than the ones who have come here for asylum, haha.

[–]744408 -2 ポイント-1 ポイント

Ok- So, if the following four litecoin pools (litecoinpool.org, LiteGuardianm, Coinotron and WelmineLTC) combined thier mining effort for dogecoin they would have more than 50% of the dogecoin Hashrate. The way the exploit would work: The group trades about $10K worth of litecoin for dogecoin. Then trades back the dogecoin for litecoin. THEN they turn on their dogecoin hashpool, reverse the transfer of the dogecoin, and spend them again buying a second $10K worth of litecoin. Tell me why it is not in the litecoin miners ecomic and game thoery benefit to do this?

[–]Shibeliumshibe [score hidden]

No, for several reasons. One of them being that tons of miners from other coins would rally to support Dogecoin if they saw that a 51% attack was happening. Another being that it would ruin the reputation of Litecoin forever making its value collapse, hurting the miners much more than they would get from an attack.

More importantly; why are you so interested in destroying Dogecoin?

[–]744408 [score hidden]

"More importantly; why are you so interested in destroying Dogecoin?"

I'm interested in knowing all crytocurrency's weak points, and discussing them so they can be addressed. I have little faith in basing an infrastructure on good intentions, as moral and noble they may be.

[–]Shibeliumshibe [score hidden]

Allright, that's fair enough I guess.

[–]cpt_mericabuilding... [score hidden]

Because an all out war between digital currencies proves to those already afraid of digital currency that it should not be adopted. Mass adoption of digital currency is not going to happen if they're too afraid of being robbed by a bully. The point of bitcoin was decentralization, and this tactic to undermine other coins uses the very opposite ideology. Since digital currency actually has no value other than perceived, stunts like this could jeopardize all coins, not just the one being attacked.

"Bitcoiners attacks Dogecoin and profit from their loss."

If outsiders are paranoid now, then good luck getting them after headlines worse than the above.

Also, look up Tragedy of the Commons.

[–]MidnightTideconspirdoge [score hidden]

Except in bitcoin circles, their marketing to the public has been a failure....and the ideals of decentralization, more power to the people - that has been a failure as well. All I see are a lot of early adapters (and people who bought at the 1000 high) being greedy and willing to do anything to hold on to their investment.
