This is the great stuff South Park episodes are born from.

...or Colbert Report bits!

Too bad it's going to be cancelled. :(

"I was cancelled for 3 days... just like Jesus" -Steven Colbert-

Yeah I agree Matt an Trey would have a field day with this

[–]Nafetsg 1107

The two later had a twitter exchange, where he called her a professional umbrage-taker.

Oh my god the responses...

There's a woman who admits to not having watched the 5-minute video, but takes issue with Zepps' use of the phrase "explain herself" because it's "the language of a stern teacher to a naughty child."

There's a woman who says that assuming your opinion as a white man is as valid as someone else's qualifies as talking over them.

These people are incredible.

Wow so asking someone to explain themselves is apparently degrading and insulting. But i still want to know why white men cant understand or have a say on the issue, will someone please explain!

[–]Trees_on_mars 23 ポイント24 ポイント

Hey twitter name is Angry Asian Woman. I thought that was a joke account mocking her. Nope.

Her reaction:

"You are so pathetic"

I didn't know she was 16 years. Would explain a lot...

I bet she got pretty offended by that.

[–]Nafetsg 409

I bet she even wrote a speech on this whole incident. She can make an appearance at your local convention center for just $1000

[–]Letsbebff 52

Yeah she's totally not trying to get famous out of this...

[–]Captain_Reseda 275 ポイント276 ポイント

She had to look up "umbrage" first.

I believe that it is an old civil war ship.

No, I am fairly certain that an umbrage is 2 or more umbrellas in the same place.

[–]Cockalorum 201

I thought it was the annoying pink teacher from the Harry Potter movies.

This is the purest, most distilled example of insufferableness I have ever witnessed. Colbert said it best last night..."I wonder what people will say when they found out I aired a cartoon of president Obama teaming up with KKK members to fight aliens on MLK day." In the age of twitter, bad writers/comedians/"personalities" exploit a system that rewards mediocre sensationalism. Ms Park is another example. Her understanding of satire is ironically close minded and obtuse. And any efforts she's made to bring awareness to her own offense only serves to further malign the plight of native Americans...which is really the ultimate irony. Because what I think Colbert was getting at is that Natives in America are likely the most forgotten, miligned, and abused minority population. And by using something as overtly stereotypical as the "Ching-chong Ding-Dong Center for Oriental blah blah" Colbert was using a stereotype so obviously offensive as to make light of the fact that the term "redskin" is (in fact) equally as offensive. And we should understand that the discomfort we feel hearing him say "Ching Chong Ding Dong" should be no different than hearing fans chant "Redskins." What a shame. Selfish. Narrow minded. And just plain shitty. Because at the end of the day, once again, it's the Native population who is forgotten about to make way for the "real" story....Suey Park's lazy opinions about satire.

I had to look up umbrage. It means "offense" or "annoyance".

Usually you would hear it said as, "I take umbrage with that [statement]". I'm sure most of you have heard it at least a few times in your lives.

I love how he kicked her ass off the show. Just perfect.

she pretty much kicked herself off the show.

Well she does literally say "as a white man..." she is showing the same bigotry and ignorance that she claims to fight. She is actually worse, she clearly makes that statement out of malice. The tweet is satire, which though she says she "understands" she clearly doesn't.

She couldn't have been more racist if she called him a honky ass mother fucker.

I mean, honestly, I am glad she got her 15 minutes, so we all now know she is a racist idiot.

Looking at her Twitter makes me sad though. Tons of people proclaiming that he 'silenced her'. So many people supporting someone who is so obviously racist, claiming they do so to fight racism. Sometimes I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Twitter is the largest community of victims on the planet. Ok, second largest after tumblr.

[–]Imitation_Gruel 1791 ポイント1792 ポイント

She doesn't even wait to get defensive. "Why cancel Colbert?" "well that's a loaded question" No it's it's not, it's as direct as can be.

[–]Youre_Still_Fat 886 ポイント887 ポイント

She's a writer, so she must know the more advanced meaning of that phrase that we can't grasp. Or she's a fucking idiot.

Spoiler (that's sarcasm, I know it because I'm a writer.): She's a total idiot. You can see her getting more stupid as the interview progresses.

i literally kept hoping her mother would walk through her bedroom door and start slapping her and yelling at her in broken english about how she wasted money on her education

Exactly. A loaded question would be "why are you so racist and sexist?" "How long have you gotten paid to give stupid opinions?"

"That's...incredibly patronizing..."

Hilarious. It's the opposite of patronizing. It's as direct and concisely critical as possible.

"I don't have time to educate you"

This is an interview where you tell us your opinions and share expertise and perspective. Are we just supposed to agree with you without hearing your point?

Future CNN pundit suey park.

she's got a bright future on basic cable in feigned outrage.

I.... actually think that was genuine...

i'm sure she will be able to muster up outrage over any number of issues.

It was genuine. And that's the problem.

She's Nancy Grace lackey material if there ever was.

I love how she pointed to another time that she trended something on twitter, as part of her credentials as a writer/activists. This is the world we live in.

So the first question is : Why cancel Colbert?

And she immediately responds with: That's a loaded question.

WHAT??? That's what you're trying to do! YOU STARTED A TREND CALLED #CANCELCOLBERT. The reporter is giving you an opportunity to answer the most basic question that pertains to what has transpired and it's a loaded question???

WOW!

That's a pretty loaded comment whitey...

[–]Amisten 60

You would think that, white liberal.

"white men talk over me"

she talks over him first

accuses him of minimalising her experiences...

tells him as a white man he doesn't have the experience or ability to sympathise or understand

Minimalism was an art movement. The word she was looking for is minimizing.

Excuse me, she's a writer, she knows ALL of the words.

Complete hypocrisy.

Sadly she will probably never realize she is in fact racist since she seems to have this perpetual-victim complex going on.

everyone keeps mentioning racist but she also seemed sexist too. Sure we may not be able to understand fully what other people/races/genders feel but that doesn't mean we can't empathize and come to understand the other side through rational conversation and observation.

[–]Dioskilos 100

Yeah people like this always strike me as constantly projecting. Strange as it may seem, much of what they say seems to really apply to themselves (just like the two examples you point out.) Honestly, I think their own world view is driven by hatred, anger and bigotry. And, weather they are aware of it or not, they just assume everyone else thinks and feels the same way they do. Obviously I'm not a mind reader so I don't really know if this is the case but it is, at the very least, an interesting perspective from which to view their comments.

When she said "my undergraduate career" I lol'd.

"You mean 'school'?"

"oh course I understand satire! I'm a writer!"

Yeah, sure you are... and yeah... sure you do.

She is in for a world of surprise when she finds out that not only are Stephen Colbert and his staff writers, but they're professional comedy writers, not undergrad bloggers.

[–]Sandtism 724

"Of course, I understand satire, I'm a writer."

Pretentious titter

"Undergraduate career" is where I stopped watching.

[–]captain_craptain 94 ポイント95 ポイント

You missed the good part at the end where they make her look like the idiot she is with a few good ones.

"I've been published on my own blogs, and in news stories about me, and Time, with someone else doing the writing!" -Suey Park, pretty much. http://time.com/42174/we-want-to-cancelcolbert/

She is a writer the way I am a Navy Seal because I can swim. EDIT: Her "work" as far as I can tell consists of this blog http://criticalspontaneity.com/2013/12/06/resignation/ and this twitter account - https://twitter.com/suey_park/ everything else seems to be cowritten.

Did you not hear about her undergraduate career? She can write a whole 140 characters.. holy shit TIL I am a writer. AMA.

She's a professional victim.

It's part of the outrage culture... Let's not have a rational discussion about things. Instead, let's all get outraged together and yell and scream so people pay attention to us.

This is SRS IRL and just as cringe worthy.

At the end she responded just like the average reddit user too. "You called my opinion stupid which means you lose the argument!"

Sorry folks, some opinions are fucking stupid.

I loved that she didn't want to go through the trouble to "educate" him, and by extension a huge audience. Real activists would practically murder someone to get the opportunity to spread their knowledge to as wide an audience as she just had. And she squanders it with racist remarks and the typical digital activist tropes of "you can't speak about things that aren't you and need to educate yourself on my position before you talk to me." Pathetic.

I actually just kind of feel bad for her.

Like how do you live life when every little thing makes you furious? I wouldn't be able to live like that. Just being that mad would tire me out on a day-to-day basis.

[–]Tobius__Funke 46 ポイント47 ポイント

She's since claimed it was all a le epic satire troll on her own part

When really she just feels stupid

Don't feel bad for her, she's trying to push her own shitty agenda on other people. If she was suffering in silence then we can feel bad, but if you're trying to brainwash people with your own childish half-baked (being generous) opinions you deserve to be miserable.

As a white man I am not able to comment on the content of this thread.

She also claimed that this was a joke and satire, because she's a writer. She's not a victim or racist. She's a fucking nutcase who gets paid to have an opinion.

I love that she keeps making herself look stupid with that "Of course I get satire... I'm a writer!" bullshit, because as a writer, she should know that "I'm a writer" is not a valid argument. Come on, we learned that in high school English.

Welcome to the (socially relevant) bad part of the internet.

Where people get fame for their opinions and facts don't matter!

WHOSE BLOG IS IT ANYWAY!

She says "white liberal's" like I would imagine a racist would say nigger.

[–]Adamant_Majority 654 ポイント655 ポイント

There was a lot of animosity in the way she turned that phrase

She did. It was at least as bad as saying "Jews" in the wrong context.

The wrong context is pretty much any time you notice that you're moving your lips to sound it out.

We call that "Dropping a hard J."

The non offensive pronunciation is yu-wish.

"GOOD BYE JEWS!!!"

If she hates white liberals that much I can't imagine how she'd react talking to a white conservative.

I'm a white conservative and expressed my distaste towards her via twitter and she hasn't said my opinion doesn't matter sooooo.... So far so good I suppose.

[–]whiskey_warrior 69 ポイント70 ポイント

If she hates "white liberals" that much I can't imagine how she feels about white conservatives. I mean, if she believes that white liberals don't get to have an opinion on anything, she probably thinks that white conservatives are the like the boogeyman or the war of 1812. Myths.

To be fair she talked over him - he was reading the tweet from Colbert out

Even disregarding that, he is the host. He is responsible for asking the questions, and keeping it within the alotted time frame of the interview. He can't just sit there and let her go off on one long spiel in regards to one question, he's got to move her along.

It has nothing to do with him being white and everything to do with his job.

Aww man, I really felt bad for this girl! I bet she gets stressed out about things that make no sense all the time. :(

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_CLAVICLE 76 ポイント77 ポイント

"That's a loaded question"

"As a white male your opinion doesn't matter" (paraphrasing)

"I'm not going to enact the labor of explaining that"

Scripted lines she uses to not answer questions she's not ready or can't answer on the spot.

Or just "you're a white cis male you'll never understand my struggle. we're so struggling. Such very struggle. White cis male no struggle shitlord" when she cannot back up her claims.

She sounded nervous, and deep down she knows she's full of shit.

she is exactly the type of person you do not want to work with.

Professional Forever Alone.

[–]Xenagos 657

What gets me is that the thing she supposedly detests, which seems to be "people being racist" is then used by her as a weapon. It's weird, because she wants White people to fix it... yet alienates White people by saying essentially we have no right to speak on it, and should just stay out of it. Wait, what?

I think this new Social Justice movement is actually imploding in on itself, and causing more harm than its preventing. When you have people like Suey Park and the other Twitter/tumblr crusaders who strike first, and without remorse, then you have an issue. I'll step in front of it, I'm Gay, but I hate those people who decorate their blog with the LGBTQ flag, and adorn their page with who they "represent" and then go on to eviscerate everything "offensive" they can find.

I have been pretty open about who I am. The way I live is forgive and forget. These people are using their "activism" as a means of venting cloaked hatred. Maybe it started off as a good cause. Go you for helping your Gay friends! But then... those bigots started pissing you off. Then you started to hate people for calling that Transman the wrong gendered pronoun. Ok, that isn't so bad as long as it wasn't intentional.

This is when they start bothering me. When you are an ally, I love you. When you are a White Knight (not literally, but sometimes it fits) then you bother me. The Civil Rights Movement was made possible through support of White people just as much as Blacks. Same with LGBTQ. Allies are called so because they are.

I'm ranting now... but Social Justice is getting warped by people like Suey Park.

Any group that says that the opinion of others is to be automatically disregarded based on any criteria should be seen as hateful. Even the opinions of the worst humanity has sired should be discounted based on their worth (if found lacking) and not their origin.

I'll step in front of it, I'm Gay, but I hate those people who decorate their blog with the LGBTQ flag, and adorn their page with who they "represent" and then go on to eviscerate everything "offensive" they can find.

Just take solace in the fact that most of them do it for themselves more than they do it for you or any other oppressed group.

She groups white men together as one big racist group that talks over women, but somehow isn't aware that there are racist Asians in the world as well.

Which is funny, considering that she's one of them

Which is funny, because Asians are pretty well known for being a bit racist.

A little more than a bit. Come out to East Asia and see the racism that they have to darker (south-eastern) asians. Or just go to any South Korean school and ask what they think of people from Japan.

She...is being incredibly racist.

She was being "unintentionally" racist while trying to raise awareness for racism. This is precisely what Colbert's twitter account was satirizing.

[–]Muadh 288

No wonder she took issue with it.

[–]free_from_version_1 302 ポイント303 ポイント

TL;DR She is a racist who is trying to be offended about racism.

Those goddamn liberal white men with their opinions... bunch of honky racists.

As a Korean-American, I find this whole shenanigan disgusting. Whether or not a joke is racist is a matter of opinion. I found Colbert's tweet humorous. Suey Park did not. And for her to rally up an internet piss parade over her specific opinion, and for her to go on HuffPost and make a fool out of herself defending her position... makes me ashamed to be called one of her. There's a fine line between pride and self-righteousness, and she overstepped her bounds by coming off as ignorant and stupid. And that does not make me a self-hater. Also, comparing "orientals" to blacks and American Indians is absolutely ridiculous and not okay. We have never been oppressed to any level close to that. We take up the other half of the globe. And for Suey Park to start this shit show defending 57% of the world population because the writer for Stephen Colbert's Twitter account used us in a satirical joke to highlight the absurdity of Dan Snyder's ACTUALLY RACIST move on American Indians... makes me wanna lose hope for the world. We learned nothing from Gandhi and MLK.

But she trended something during a Super Bowl. That's like important or something. So she's like important.

[–]Pass_the_lolly 8 ポイント9 ポイント

Her words were she "helped trend" .... That's even worse!

I think we'll find most people -- probably including your korean self, and my white male self -- agree that using identity politics go make a career of self important indignation sucks.

allracisitssuckincludingsueypark

makes me ashamed to be called one of her

Don't worry, anyone's opinion that matters won't be judging you based off your race. You might be korean-american but you seem nothing like her, for a start you seem infinitely more intelligent and thoughtful.

The sooner we start viewing people as people instead of races and groups the better. There are tons of stupid racist white men.

The only really useful thing race tells us about a person is physical charactersists. Beyond that it's all just assumptions. Race is superficial.

People who try and fight racism by forming their own racist groups and opinions are doomed to repeat the mistakes . Funnily enough most white racist groups in Europe use very similar arguments regarding race and "white cuture" as extremist anti-racist groups.

Racism will end when people start fighting ALL discrimination and abuse, not only that which affects them or their race/culture/whatever.

The idea that white men can be treated differently because in history white men have done bad things is fucking absurd.

NOT Colbert's twitter account (the video is pretty clear on this).

"I work actively against all kinds of racism, not just towards Asians. Also, all white men talk over me and shouldn't be able to comment on this because they don't understand."

I think the point is that Suey Park, and only Suey Park, gets to decide which opinions are valid, regardless of their content.

[–]Cut_the_dick_cheese 96 ポイント97 ポイント

serious question, never heard of this woman. Why and how did she get famous?

She's what they call "Twitter famous", aka not famous.

She became popular with a specific audience on Twitter and Tumblr that shared her narrow minded beliefs. This is quite common on social media. The problem is that, sometimes, these individuals unexpectedly get the attention they crave and decide to enact their beliefs onto the general population which typically isn't going to agree with their tunnel vision views. Notice how she immediately started speaking as if what she was saying is scripted.

PS: Don't let her misrepresent the University of Illinois. We're actually quite intelligent over here.

Don't let her misrepresent the University of Illinois. We're actually quite intelligent over here.

It would be pretty funny if the people who criticsed that woman then went on to stereotype a whole group of people based off one person's actions. The hypocrisy would be tangible.

[–]CJ_Productions 64 ポイント65 ポイント

she's not really famous. she just has lots of stupid followers on twitter and popularized the "Cancelcolbert" twitter trend.

[–]Ralanost 117

I love how she was bragging she had other hashtags popularized and trending. Because of her. Not only is she racist and sexist, but she is also an egomaniac.

It's great how she complains about lines of questioning being unproductive, then brags about a hashtag.

I am so damn ashamed to attend the same university as Suey. I am currently in an Asian American studies class, and they are praising this woman as a fucking hero for her total shit show. I stand by the belief that the SJWs like her are turning matters of equality into matters of professional victimhood for personal gain. It fucking sickens me.

I'm Asian, not a single one of my friends or anyone I know are this stupid. This woman has no idea what satire or sarcasm is. That's a special kind of dumb.

If people are really praising that, the university might need to raise its admission standards.

I lost it when he said "it's just a stupid opinion." Didn't see it coming and loved every second of it. Well done Josh.

I thought it was a bit too much to be honest, but he had every right to say that. What pissed me off the most was how she reacted. It pisses me off on so many levels I think I have to break it down.

  • She takes the same holier than thou attitude she has had during the entire interview. She's been acting like an expert talking to toddlers the entire interview. She's Asian - and a woman to boot! - so she automatically trumps any white male's opinion on minorities by at least a few factors, apparently and the interviewer simply isn't seeing that.
  • She says calling her opinion 'stupid' is unproductive, offensive and patronizing. Meanwhile her answer to his satire question makes no point at all other than she took umbrage from it so it was rather unproductive, she offensively wont stop referring to those she doesn't like as "white liberals" and "white men" as if gender and ethnicity governs racism and empathy.
  • She basically says that, as a white man he will never be able to understand what colored people are actually saying. So if you are not a person of color then your opinion does not matter. She does rally the 'whites' and commands them to spread the word and fight the good fight though. Is there anything more patronizing than telling people that they literally are incapable of understanding your point and that they are supposed to follow it blindingly?

Something about the way she followed up with "you just called my opinion stupid" just really urked me.

Same. "You just called my opinion stupid". It's the way she clearly thinks her opinion is of such importance. "I'm a writer and an activist, I've got a few things on trending on twitter how dare you belittle my opinion"

I've noticed a lot of people confuse being entitled to their own opinion with other people having to agree with their opinion. But if they just opened their eyes a bit more they would see that the world doesn't work that way...

[edit] literally no pun(that is what that would be right?) intended, though I do find it hilarious now that it's been pointed out to me!

He did an excellent job of both allowing her the freedom to state her opinion and then calling her out without being confrontational.

"Being white doesn't mean I gave up my right to have an intellectual conversation when I was born"

I loved this quote from the host. Telling someone "your opinion doesn't count because you are a white man" is both ad hominem and racist itself

After she said "when men feel they have a right to talk over me" what if he said "asian women feel they have a right to be shitty drivers" she would cry racism to be marginalized and having her opinion discarded outright simply for her race like she is doing with the host.

Her hypocrisy is overwhelming, debate the facts of the specific topic or don't. You don't get to say "your opinion doesn't matter because of your race".

As a white male I am just checking in to see if there are any people of color around here to tell me what range of thoughts might be acceptable. I would not want to patronize anyone.

If you think this is bad, just wait until you scroll through her Twitter "stream of consciousness". You have to constantly remind yourself that it's a real person who genuinely believes the things she tweets and RTs, and -- worse yet -- that there are thousands who follow and support her 100%. It's disturbing, actually.

Park suggested that she [...] is playing to a part and, in the process, satirizing what we might expect from a twenty-three-year-old hashtag activist. “There’s no reason for me to act reasonable, because I won’t be taken seriously anyway,” she said. “So I might as well perform crazy to point out exactly what’s expected from me.”

    http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2014/03/twitter-campaign-to-cancel-colbert-report.html

In other words, she claims that she believes in the sentiment behind the things she says, but takes them to their extreme so that they'll get noticed (even if, by doing so, people call her crazy and ridicule her). Coming from a 23 year old, i'm inclined to think that that's just an excuse to go back on the crazier things she's said ("haha, that was satire guys! lol"), but I'm not too familiar with the things she's done other than #CancelColbert, so I feel like she deserves the benefit of the doubt (at least, for now).

I get what she's trying to say, it just doesn't seem like she's very good at articulating it.

Suey is trying to say that Colbert's joke is offensive in the same way that it would have been offensive if Colbert had said his foundation was named "The Porch Monkey Foundation for the Sensitivity to Niggers or Whatever." Clearly, Colbert would have gotten a lot of flack if that had been the joke, why should using a racial epithet for Asians be any different? What makes one slur okay and another not okay?

That point makes sense. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of people watching, that point was lost under all the crazy stuff she did/said:

    • She instantly assumed that she was being attacked ("well that's a loaded question...")
    • Making blanket statements about a group of people (i.e. "white liberals")
    • Blaming "white liberals" for
      • joking about racism
      • not really caring
      • "feeling like they can't have fun any more, and feeling entitled to laugh at things that aren't funny,"
    • Speaking over the host: "I know, but white men definitely feel like they are entitled to talk over me..."
    • "[White men] feel entitled to minimalize my experience"
    • "[White men] feel like they're sooo logical compared to women"
    • (Interrupting again): "You just called my opinion stupid, so I'm not going to enact the labor of having to explain to you why that's incredibly offensive"

Most of all, the thing that grinded my gears was how she passively attacked the host by referring to "white men," and then got super offended when the host directly attacked her by calling her opinion stupid.

It's a real shame that the only people who get airtime when it comes to fighting against the inequalities that a lot of people don't see are always so bad at presenting their arguments. It makes the people who view them think that those arguments are invalid (hence why people think all feminists are crazy man-haters when the majority of them are down-to-earth people who are tired of tangible, observable, often unconscious ways people treat women as inferior).

Also, why the hell do people ALWAYS send death/rape threats ANY time a woman is in the news for something controversial? WHAT THE HELL?!?

Agree 100% with your assessment, especially "It's a real shame that the only people who get airtime when it comes to fighting against the inequalities that a lot of people don't see are always so bad at presenting their arguments. It makes the people who view them think that those arguments are invalid". In the end though, the sad thing to me is that if the same "satire" were used by a prominent conservative, the resulting coverage and response would have been quite different. It wouldn't surprise me if the interviewer's attitude would have been different as well.
