I doubt such a great man actually took pleasure in killing. He was even reluctant to serve as president. You need a certain degree of psychopathy to both enjoy killing and lust for power. Washington clearly had very little of this trait.

I myself am not as angelic, but I do strive towards the ideals and values that were held by this great man.

In his youth, I absolutely beg to differ. In his first contact with the French at the onset of the French and Indian war... an event that many claim was the catalyst for the full fledged war in the colonies, Washington wrote this to his brother after massacring a French patrol and diplomat:

"The right wing, where I stood, was exposed to and received all the enemy's fire ... I heard the bullets whistle, and, believe me, there is something charming in the sound."

I love Washington, don't get me wrong, but he was a warrior, through and through!

Of course, we can never truly know the motivations and driving forces of others, especially those who have passed. However, I have found that those who, especially in their youth, crave military service typically revel in the success of their chosen profession; and killing the enemy is the ultimate goal of a military professional.
