Charlie Rose：あなたは日本で最初に iPhone を提供するキャリアになりたいとスティーブ・ジョブズを説得しました。電話をかけたのですか？ それとも実際に彼にと会ったのですか？
Charlie Rose: You persuaded Steve Jobs to let you be the first carrier to offer the iPhone in Japan. Did you call him up? Go see him?
孫正義：それはジョブズが iPhone を発表する２年前のことでした。彼に電話をかけ、会いにいきました。iPod にモバイル機能を備えたちょっとしたスケッチも持っていきました。「マサ、キミのひどいスケッチをくれなくてもいいよ。ボクには自分のがあるから」とスティーブは答えました。そして「キミはクレージーだ。まだ誰にも話したことないのに、キミが最初に会いにきた。だからキミにあげよう。」そこで自分はいいました、「ちゃんと紙に書いて、署名してくれ」と。「ノーだよ、マサ。署名なんかできない。だってキミはまだ携帯キャリアすら持っていないじゃないか」と彼。だから自分は 200 億ドル投じて携帯キャリアを買収したのです。
Masayoshi Son: That was two years before he introduced the iPhone. I called him up and went to see him. And I brought my little drawing of an iPod with mobile capability. Steve says, “Masa, don’t give me your s---ty drawing. I have my own.” He said, “You’re crazy. We haven’t talked to anybody, but you came to see me first. I’ll give it to you.” So I said, “Write it down and sign it for me.” He said, “No, Masa, I’m not going to sign for you, because you don’t even own a mobile carrier yet.” I spent $20 billion doing that.

孫氏の発言ぶりを Charlie Rose が少しパラフレーズしているが、当時の様子をいきいきと語るところは必見だ。
こんなに楽しそうに語る日本のトップを見るのは初めだ。
じっさいにその場に居合わせたひとしか分からないニュアンスがよく出ている。

Charlie Rose: And when he… looking for somebody to carrier in Japan for his iPhone, you said, “Me!”
Masayoshi Son: That was 2 years before he introduced iPhone. So I said, you know, if I would enter into the mobile business, …mobile carrier business, I need a weapon. Who can create the best weapon in the world. It’s only one guy. Steve Jobs.
Rose: So did you call him up, or did you go see him?
Son: I called up, and went to see him. I brought my little drawing of iPod with the mobile capability, and I gave him my drawing, and Steve said, “Masa, you don’t give… Masa, you don’t give me your drawing. [laugh] I have my own. [laugh] Don’t give me your crap.
I said I don’t need to give you my dirty paper, but once you have your own product, give me for Japan.
He said, “Masa, you are crazy. We had not talked anybody, but you came to see me as a first guy. I give to you.”
Rose: Is that right? So you walked away with the … as the carrier in Japan that would be affiliated with iPhone?
Son: Before I acquired Vodaphone Japan.
I said to him if you can give me exclusively for Japanese market, that would be fantastic.
So I said, “Write it down, and sign for me.”
“Masa, Masa, I’m not going to sign for you, ’cause you don’t own mobile carrier yet.” [laugh]
So I said, “Look Steve, you promise me, you give me your word, I bring carrier for Japan.”
Rose: And you did?
Son: I did. I spent 20 billion dollars.

ときには厳しい突っ込みをいれることで有名な Charlie Rose のインタビューで、こんなにのびのびと楽しそうに語る日本人を見たのは初めてだ。
