いじめが原因として、全国の警察が摘発した暴行や傷害などの事件が２０１３年に４１０件あり、前年より１５０件（５８％）増えたことが２７日、警察庁のまとめで分かった。４００件を上回るのは１９８５年以来２８年ぶり。摘発、補導した児童・生徒も２１３人増の７２４人で、２７年ぶりに７００人を超えた。
大幅増の背景として、警察庁は「学校との連携を強化したことに加え、大津市のいじめ自殺事件後に世間の関心が高まって相談も増えたため」と分析。いじめ防止対策推進法の施行を受け、１３年からいじめの定義を見直して広くとらえた影響もあるという。
