日本の大学生は，「読む」「書く」に比べ「聞く」「話す」の力が弱いと言われています．原因としては，口語英語が大学入学までの段階で本格的に取り上げられていないこと，実際に会話を交わす機会が少ないことなどが挙げられます．皆さんにはある程度の文法力がありますから，推敲の効く「書く」の方はある程度できます．ところが「話す」ときに必要な表現が瞬時に出てくるためには，一定数の口語表現を身につけ，さらにそれを使用する練習を積む必要があります．この教科書で会話の機会を提供するのは無理ですが，口語表現をある程度まとめて学ぶ機会を提供することはできます．以下，タイプ別に憶えやすい口語表現を提示します．なお，ここで言う口語表現とは，書き言葉では使われないという意味ではありません．また，挙げられている日本語は英語の完全な訳ではありませんので注意して下さい．(A) はアメリカ英語，(B) はイギリス英語です．例文も大いに参考にして下さい．
14.1. 一日の動作
いびきをかく snore I snore in my sleep when I have drunk too much.
目覚ましを止める switch off I switched off the alarm but soon got back to sleep.
寝過ごす oversleep I forgot to set my alarm and so I overslept.
寝ぼけている be half asleep I got dressed while I was still half asleep, and so I forgot to put on my socks.
布団を畳む fold up I folded up a blanket and a futon with my husband inside.
押入にしまう put in a closet I put the blanket in the closet, next to the pillow.
トイレの水を流す flush It is polite to flush the toilet after you use it.

着替える change I changed so quickly that I put my pants on back-to-front.

ボタンがとれる come off The buttons keep coming off my shirt, because I am getting fat.
チャックを上げる zip up You must remember to zip up your suitcase / trousers.
チャックを下げる unzip I unzipped my suitcase so all my things fell out.
ズボンを下ろす pull down The doctor asked me to pull down my trousers.
靴下を履く pull on I pulled on my socks and rushed off to work.
袖をまくる roll up I rolled up my sleeves as I would need to work hard on this job.
ズボン等に入れる tuck in I tried to tuck in my shirt but my trousers were too tight.
化粧をする make up She wanted to make up her face, but she had forgotten her lipstick.
髪をとかす comb He used to comb his hair every day, but now he is bald.
ひげを剃る shave I used to shave in the dark, but I kept cutting myself.
コンセントに差す plug in When I plugged in the hairdryer, I received an electric shock.
コンロをつける turn on At seven every morning, I turn on the gas stove to cook an egg.
注ぐ pour Every evening when I come home from work, I pour myself a drink.
かき回す stir I often stir my coffee with a pen.
朝食を抜く skip I'm not on a diet but I skipped breakfast this morning.
元栓を切る turn off ... at the mains Be sure to turn off the gas at the mains before you leave.
外出する go out I often go out on Fridays with my friends.
外食する eat out There's no food in the house, so we'll have to eat out tonight.
胡椒取って ! pass Pass me the pepper, please. I like my food to be spicy.
もうお腹一杯 have enough I asked him if he'd like another drink, but he said he'd had enough.
飲みに行く go for drink Every Monday my colleagues and I go out for drink after work.
うがいをする gargle The singer gargles for 20 minutes each evening to protect his voice.
いねむりする take a nap After a heavy lunch, I like to take a nap.

歯を磨く brush I have to brush my teeth seven times a day, because I eat a lot of sweets.
お茶を入れる make tea My husband made tea for me every morning when we were first married.
洗濯する do washing I only do washing once a month, so I have to have lots of clothes.
漂白する bleach I accidentally dyed my shirt red, so now I have to bleach it white.
洗濯物を干す hang out My neighbor (A) / neighbour (B) lights a bonfire every time I hang out my washing.
洗濯物を取り込む take in Whenever I take in my washing, he puts his bonfire out.
ドライクリーニング dry clean Finally, I decided to have my clothes dry cleaned instead.
アイロンをかける iron The dry-cleaners also iron my shirts. That saves me lots of time.
爪を切る cut nails I used to cut my toenails in the bath, but my wife complained.
ベッドを整える make the bed When I stayed in this hotel before, that maid used to make my bed.
布団を敷く lay out I laid out the futon violently and it stirred up a lot of dust.
目覚ましをかける set ... for ... I always set my alarm clock for 6, but I never get up until 7.
寝返りを打つ turn over I turn over so much in my sleep that I often fall out of bed.
