The problem of illegal edits and redistributes will always be there. People will edit and redistribute models they shouldn't, we can't change that. But there are always people who want to inform others not to do that. Sometimes it helps, but sometimes both sides start to argue.. So..

Easy steps how to react to illegal actions in MMD Community:

:bulletblack: If you won't be able to handle negative and completely troll-ish replies from the person who is doing something illegal- do not comment. It will lead to something we do not want- drama.

:bulletblack: If you are not sure if the person edited something he shouldn't:
:bulletred: Do not comment with hate. Ask nicely at first, e.g: The face of your model, looks like Kio's Lily, did you use her or i am mistaken it? The answer might not always be true, but if the person reacts very harshly you can either suspect something and continue being calm with the questions or leave him alone to avoid drama
:bulletred: Do not show the person to public. This is a stupid thing to do. If you really are not sure about that, do not post a journal or picture about it, contact a person who knows the rules and could help with the problem. Because no-one likes to be trolled, and people will do that after you will show the person to public.

:bulletblack:Do not comment with hate at any circumstances. Maybe the person is new to MMD and PMD and doesn't know all the rules? Inform him nicely, e.g: You used Nanami's Teto to create your model, you do know she can't be edited?. Sometimes this helps, but if the person is troll-ish and know the rules and says they are stupid (Look to the first step)

These are the most common and basic problems. There are a lot of them in our MMD Community, but you should know that if you will do something with hate, your reply won't be nice. So please, stay calm or do not comment at all

unless it's copyrighted, it's not illegal, also its the internet, you cant put something up for download and expect to still have the usage in control, that's just stupid wishfull thinking

Sure you can, where were you when major file hosting sites were permanently removed due to illegal file sharing just last year. Legally you can do anything if you can A) prove it and B) want to take it that far. Unless its for money most ppl wont bother no matter how annoyed they are so its best authors to create with the idea in mind someone will probably destroy your work. If that doesn't bother you as a artist then proceed to release your work.

Even if the file host is gone, others still have it, and they can redistribute it regardless of the model creator (if they want to)
And you still can't do anything because these models are protected by copyright, for as long as hose models don't have rights, legal action can be attempted but not successful.

The file host doesn't exist because they hosted illegal material which means when the next file host accumulates enough illegal materiel it will be faced with black listing as well. Because of what happen most file hosts will remove uploaded files if someone complains to avoid being black listed by the government. So all it takes is a well written letter and poof your upload is gone.

As far as copy write goes you can trademark your material. Trademarks means you own that specific version. It does not mean you own the IP so if a artist felt to go as far as have a model trademarked yes you can seek legal actions if you really had nothing to do with your time. Just because someone else envisioned the original idea does not mean you are a punching bag and don't have options for legal protection if you take appropriate steps. Most MMD modelers don't because its not that serious and its a hobby.

mmd files aren't illegal material

And with the copyright and trademark, that's what I mean, it isn't protected with rights or trademarks so people are free to do as they wish (should they want to).
You just took what I said and repeated it in different words. (2nd paragraph)

If I trademark my work and someone else uses it in a way I don't see fit after I lay out clear ground rules yep its illegal material. Maybe you miss read what I said lol. Nothing stops someone from trademarking and it will be entertaining to watch someone get burned when they find out someone did rofl. Legally as far as I know no one has been made a example of in the MMD community so people think nothing can happen. Lol that's where they are sorely wrong. Its best to stay out of trouble and follow the rules the author set since he/she was pretty generous to begin with by even releasing it. It would be nice to return the favor instead of attempt to take advantage of them.

Rules are like guidelines, you can follow them, or can disregard them. It doesn't change the item to illegal material because they're just rules (non-trademarked models). And why are you still talking about trademark when it's pretty clear already that hardly anyone is going to trademark their models. There is no need for it. You don't pay for the models, if someone takes a model and edits it or redistributes it, it's not causing damage to the creator. It's just a model that someone put on the internet foolishly thinking, "I'll put rules up, and everybody will read and respect them! Yeah!" No, that's called being ignorant to the internet.

Its mostly a problem when someone takes credit for work they did not create. That is a nono. No body should be really super upset if someone mods their stuff.
