River Valley Leader, Dec. 9, 2013, 9:25a ET updated at 4:26p ET: BREAKING: Pope County 911 receives reports of explosion at Arkansas Nuclear One [...] Just before 8 a.m., Monday morning, December 9, reports of an explosion at Arkansas Nuclear One were made to Pope County 911 operators. At this time details have not been released in the explosion, but fire officials are reportedly responding to the nuclear facility and a fire is being fought. A resident in the vicinity of the Arkansas Nuclear One plant reported a “loud, ground shaking explosion and then saw smoke.”
Wall St. Journal, Dec. 9, 2013 at 2:31p ET: The fire started in the electrical switchyard after a transformer exploded and ignited [NRC spokesman Victor Dricks] said […] The blaze started at 7:50 a.m. and was contained by 9:17 a.m., according to Entergy.
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Dec. 9, 2013 at 11:45a ET: Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokesman Tommy Jackson said that the fire had not extinguished within the 15 minutes of detection. “The auxiliary transformer exploded in Unit Two, and there was fire within the protected area,” he said.
River Valley Leader, Dec. 9, 2013 at 3:31p ET: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has activated its incident response center in Arlington, Texas, following the declaration of an Unusual Event at the Arkansas Nuclear One nuclear power plant. [...] The Unusual Event was declared by operators at 8 a.m. CST after Unit 2 experienced a transformer explosion in an electrical switchyard. The interruption of electrical power to Unit 2 caused protective systems to shut down the reactor.
River Valley Leader, Dec. 9, 2013 at 3:28p ET: [...] reports of an explosion at Arkansas Nuclear One were received by Pope County 911 dispatchers. The explosion that was later determined to be a transformer blowing, caused a fire to erupt in the nuclear facility.
KUAR, Dec. 9, 2013 at 1:29p ET: “The issue was that the transformer itself contains oil. [...] the responders made the decision to let the oil fire burn off,” says [Entergy spokesman Mike Bowling].
Russelville Courier, Dec. 9, 2013 at 10:17a ET: Operators will keep the Unit 2 reactor offline while the cause of the explosion is investigated and a determination is made on what repairs are necessary. [ANO spokesperson Donna Gregory] said it has not yet been determined how long the unit will remain offline. Currently there is an investigation into the cause of the fire and extent of damage.

Oil sure admit to that, it's the PCB's in the transformer oil they will not admit to. Another aggressive dose source of carcinogens forced on all those who get near it. When a monster solar x flare finally does take out the power grid, this danger from the huge sub station transformers alone burning choking PCB oil is menacing enough, now it looking like it will be the final kill shot.

This is such an awesome source of info. My one quibble is when they omit the Great Lakes or where Canadian land dips south from wind info everyone east of them loses quite a bit of info. I'm hoping someone here might know the creators of this site. It would be so much more helpful to put another color where the lakes and where Canadian territory dips south so those east of those areas still get data.

ALERT *Radiation is being released to atmosphere*.
At this time, the full extent of structural
damage on Unit 1 is not known. There was one known fatality and 4
known serious injuries to workers. The local coroner is on site for
the fatality and the injured personnel have been transported offsite to local
hospitals. Investigation into the cause of the failure and extent of damage
is ongoing.
On Unit 2, all rods inserted during the trip.
The core is being cooled via *Natural circulation. Decay heat is being removed
via *Steam dumps to Atmosphere*. There is no known primary to secondary leakage.

I can hear the response from Incident Management Team in Arlington, Texas, "Well, la dee da."
Isn't it nice to know we are protected by selfless folks who put their lives on the line to protect us from harm … "we decided to let the oil fire burn itself out."
Kind of like at Daichi, "We decided to just let the entire radioactive inventory loose into that large body of water which is the Pacific Ocean …" No problem here. When the sea life is all gone, there will be no critters left to interfere with our algae-to-biofuels production programs …
Where do they find these people?
Oh right, right here in our own back yard …

My guess – and yes, it's just a guess – is that they decided to let it burn because the immediate danger to firefighters in an enclosed area was quickly calculated to be more trouble in the long run than letting it burn and dispurse. Any dangers to neighbors or Russelville would be far less, and a whole lot harder to demonstrate in court per cause than for dead firefighters.

Arkansas Nuclear One = 5/21/74, licensed thru 5/2034
We will be told that this is a routine accident and all is well for the next 20 years with this ONE nuclear
power plant.
The spent fuel at Arkansas Nuclear One will be stored on site for as long as possible since we don't really have any idea what to do with it. No problem.

" Self, don't you just hate it when your StuxNet virus gets loose in teh wild and you realize you forgot to put a self-destruct switch in it?
Wouldn't surprise me if someone at a company building the pump controllers for Iranian enrichment centrifuges used the same SIMATIC NET device addressing schema for other things they built, like…Japanese cooling pump controllers and other things run by PLC's.
Like transformer station controllers in Arkansas."
Good thing I'm not paranoid though, or those kind of thoughts would keep me up at night…

Is Arkansas a ‘canary-in-coal mine’ state for seismic adjustments on New Madrid?
June 24 2013
"Arkansas, with its recent uptick of seismic activity, would suggest that it is indeed a "canary-in-the-coal mine" state, but you be the judge.
"Could there be a connection between two nuclear power plant accidents only two days apart – one in Arkansas and one in Missouri – both in the New Madrid area? The first nuclear incident, an Emergency Level 4 event, was on Mar 31 at Nuclear One at the Entergy Arkansas plant in Russellville. Even though initial reports provided no information about the nature of the incident, it was later revealed that a “crane collapsed” killing one and injuring eight."
There are 15 nuclear plants in the New Madrid Seismic Zone..

Strategies To Preserve Life For Nuclear Power Plant Facilities Along the San Madrid Earthquake Fault Line
"A disaster recovery plan is necessary to ensure the continued operation of the nuclear power plant in the aftermath of an earthquake. The return to normal power grid operations is a primary life preservation issue in states like Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee which abut the San Madrid Earthquake Fault Line."
