The Zenit-E, the classic. First remove the lens. You can now see the mirror. Left side of the camera houses the lightmeter. Rightside the speed, film counter and film advance. If your Zenit has a flash adapter. Remove it. Check the back for deteriorating foam, dust or dents. Check for missing screws. On this '72 camera the serial number is located left of the eyepiece and the KMZ logo is located on the bottom of the camera. The eyepiece can be removed by turning it. Don't unless it's absolutely nessecarry. Check the filmback for smoothness. Removal of the lightmeter and film rewind. Pull up the rewind and remove both screws. Looking down into the lightmeter you can see a tube. This has to be removed by turning it counterclockwise. A special tool exists but removing it by pressing into the holes on the bottom with a screwdriver is possible. With the tube removed the lightmeter is easily disassembled into several rings. Set the speed selector to "B" now remove the two screws in the black speed ring. Remove the black ring and remove the screw in the flash select ring. Then remove the flash select ring. Remove the inner ring around the shutter this ring is removed by turning it clockwise. Remove the filmcounter ring. There is a loose ring below it, take it out. The next ring is removed clockwise (use a screwdriver with care). Again turning clockwise the black ring is removed. These 3 screws hold the filmadvance lever in place. If you remove it you will hear the spring unwinding itself. You can hold it in place using a needle. But at this time it is not nessecary. Now remove the 3 silver screws, 2 on the left and one on the right. Carefully remove the cameras topcover. The spring will now unwind itself if you haven't locked it down, don't worry about it. Check the foam around the prism. If it is deteriorating remove it and replace it. Springtime. This is what it looks like when not locked down. Left the spring lock, right the removed spring. Left the speed/flash selector, right the prism. Left between the two rings the springholder. Carefully wind the spring back on. You can also remove the two rings and wind it up that way. Lock the spring with a needle before you reassemble your Zenit. For reassembly just follow this page in a reversed order. |
