Biden begins three-nation Asia visit amid territorial dispute

WASHINGTON - US Vice-President Joe Biden will arrive in Japan on Monday night, the first stop of his three-nation Asia visit aimed at promoting US economic and trade interests, and underscoring Washington’s commitment to rebalancing its foreign policy towards the Asia-Pacific, says the White House.

Besides Japan, Mr Biden will also visit China and South Korea. He will meet with key leaders to discuss a full range of bilateral, regional and global issues, according to a White House statement.

In Tokyo, Mr Biden will reaffirm the enduring strength of the US-Japan alliance as a cornerstone of peace and stability in the region, says the statement. He will meet with Prime Minster Shinzo Abe, Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, and members of the Diet on Tuesday to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues. These include a Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement and opportunities to deepen the economic and security partnerships, says the White House. He will also meet with Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako at the Togu Palace. 

On Tuesday, the US leader will visit an internet company focused on social network development, e-commerce and other web services. He will tour the facilities and meet with women working there to discuss their role in the Japanese economy and the challenges they face in the workplace, before holding a roundtable discussion.
