The Dragon is well-known around the world as a symbol of vitality, strength, and balance. The Japanese Dragon is often regarded as the "Celestial Guardian of the Universe" because it is imbued with the ability to control the rains that nourish the country. In Buddhism, the dragon represents the obstacles one must overcome before reaching enlightenment.
It is only fitting then that Pilot-Namiki chose to feature the Ryu, or Dragon, on their stunning anniversary pen -- 95 years of achieving great success from humble beginnings.
Maki-e, the traditional Japanese art of lacquering, is used
to apply patterns that are first drawn on a surface with urushi
(sap from a Japanese lacquer tree). Silver and gold pigments
are then applied to the painted surface in order to illuminate the dragon against the rich black background.
Take a look at the ornate patterns that fill almost every inch of this Yukari fountain pen. Raised textures such as on the dragon's scales create a pleasurable tactile element and are achieved through Taka (raised) and Togidashi (burnished) Maki-e techniques.
