　私が今注目している番組にNHKが放送している「病の起源」という番組がある。
病とは人類進化の過程で人類が取り込んだ病気で、いわば一種の宿命のようなものだが、そのメカニズムが解明されれば対処方法も明確になるとのアプローチ方法だ。

　第一集は「がん　人類進化が生んだ病」だった。人類の進化こそががんの原因だという。
がん細胞の増殖メカニズムを生物進化の過程から追ったものだが、この中で私が知っていた唯一の知識は、今から５億５千万年前に生物が単細胞から多細胞に進化したことだけだった。
これは当たり前で、多細胞になるには細胞のコピーが必要になるが時にコピーミスが生じて、それががん細胞になる。

　しかしそれだけでは人類が際立ってがんの発生率が高いという理由にはならないのだそうだ。人のがん死亡率は３０％程度なのに対して人間に最も近いチンパンジーでは２％なので、がんは人類特有の病気と言ってもよい。
これは人類が７００万年前に二足歩行になり、手が自由に使えて食料を多く獲得できるようになったことに起源があるという。

　食料が多くなると女と男の分業が始まり、男はもっぱら狩りに精をだし、女は子育てに特化し始めた（それまでは男女の別なく狩りをしていた）。ここからが実に面白いのだが女は狩りのうまい男を捕まえないと子育てができないから（今流に言えば所得の高い男性を捕まえれば専業主婦でいられる）、餌を多く運んだ男にのみ交尾を許すことにした。

　チンパンジーなどでは女は交尾期間があって、お尻が膨らんでその時期を知らせるのだが、こんなことをすると男は交尾期間しか餌を運んでくれない（実際動物の子育てはそうなっている）。
そのため女は交尾期間をわからなくして常時男に餌を運ばせる戦略に出た（お尻を膨らまなくした）。

　一方男としては子孫を残すためにそれまでは交尾期間だけ発情すればよかったのに、これでは常時発情していなければ子孫を残せない。
そのためには常に精子を作り続けなければならないので、精子を特別に増殖する機能を獲得していったという。

　私は長い間なぜ人類だけが常時交尾をするのか不思議に思っていたが、男女間の分業と男に餌をとらせるための女の戦略（餌さえ与えれば交尾を許してくれる女性の出現）が人類が常時発情する原因だと聞いて、笑いこけてしまった。
「そうか、男が他の動物と違って常時発情していたのは人類進化の一環で、男が特別に好きものだということではないんだ・・・・・・」

注）私は若いころ自分が動物と異なり常時精子ができ、女性に興味を持つのか不思議でならなかった。発情期という期間限定の行動であったらどんなに救われるかと恨んだものだ。

　そしてこのこととがん細胞の関係は、精子増殖のメカニズムをがん細胞が取り込んだからだという。精子は他の細胞に比較して増殖能力が際立って高いのだが、がんも全く同じで増殖能力が際立って高い。
日本経済の成長要因を分析して中国経済が大躍進したようなものだ。
だから、精子を増殖して繁栄した人類は同時にがんを増殖したことになる

　さらに１８０万年前に人類は石器を発明し、脳の大きさを飛躍的に拡大した。この脳の大きさの拡大にはFSAという酵素が必要で、FSAは脳の構成要素の脂肪酸を作り出す能力がある。
この脂肪酸のおかげで脳が巨大化したのだが、これを見ていたがん細胞は自身も巨大化する目的でFSAを取り込み、巨大化することに成功した。

　「本当かい？」という感じで、これではがん細胞の戦略は最初に精子増殖能力を取り込み、次に脳を巨大化するFSAの能力を取り込んで、他の細胞より素早く巨大化し結果として人類を死に至らしめることになる。
なぜがん細胞はそんな戦略をとるのだろうか。宿主である人間を殺してしまったら、がん細胞も死滅するのだからそれより共生の戦略をとったほうがはるかに合理的だ。

　考えられる理由は進化には常にプラス面とマイナス面が同伴し、一方だけが都合よく進化しないということだろう。
たとえば経済成長でもそれで人類は裕福になるが、一方で公害問題が発生し成長すればするほど公害に悩まされるのと似ている。

　もっともこの番組は人間の英知でこうした負の要因を克服すれば人類はがんの疾病から逃れられるということを言っており、たとえばがん細胞内にあるFSAの動きを止めればがん細胞が死滅していく実験を紹介していた。

　この番組は実に興味深い。「なぜ男は助平か」ということに悩む純情な青年にとり、精子増殖のメカニズムを知っただけでも、若者にとって福音になるだろう。

Series I is watching now is a show called "The Origin of the disease" of NHK.
Disease in which the human race is captured in the course of human evolution, it's like a kind of fate. So, mechanisms have been elucidated, prescription law of the illness becomes clear.
