The City to the Sunset

We have a small town feel, because we are a "real" small city with 1,970 residents.  Unlike many communities in the metropolitan area, North Plains has enjoyed a very gradual growth, ensuring that it remains a small semi-rural community.  (At a maximum our projected growth will only reach 4,000 by 2020--and we like that!)  City planners have encouraged slow growth and retaining a large agricultural green space around the community to ensure our community retains its small town feel.

Our community hosts a world famous Garlic Festival.  Summer activities include a large 4th of July Celebration.  Throughout the year the City sponsors concerts in the park, dances, and library programs for kids and adults.   A wide variety of activities are offered at the North Plains Senior Center.  Volunteer organizations like the North Plains Events Association, Knights of Pythias and Chamber of Commerce support unique activities like the annual Jingle.

Our residents have easy access to jobs at employers like Intel, Genentech, and Nike.  Located approximately 15 miles west of downtown Portland Oregon, North Plains is within a short drive to the much larger City of Hillsboro and within 10 minutes of the City of Beaverton.  Highway 26 along the City's southern boundary provides ready access to Portland and the Oregon coast as well.

North Plains is a hub of bicycling activity, rain or shine.  Many riders can be seen on the rural roads in and around our community everyday.  Small parks have been developed throughout town to provide rest areas for athletes and book worms.  Expanding park areas and walking trails is a high priority for the community as reflected in our master plans.

The community has existed for almost 100 years, with formal incorporation as a City occurring in 1963.  Residents enjoy the benefits of well-managed infrastructure of improved streets, parks, and water systems.  A professional staff of 10.5 full-time and 17 part-time/volunteer employees assists Council and residents with library, budgeting, police services, planning, building, utility billing, and public works maintenance.
