Help us save the Asian Historic Justice Internship Program at Queensborough Community College, CUNY!

In September 2012, Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE), in cooperation with the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives (KHRCA) at Queens Community College, CUNY, launched the Asian Historic Justice Internship Program.  Headed by Professor Jimin Kim (Phd, Columbia University), this one-semester program was designed in response to the lack of awareness and discourse on Japanese war crimes during World War II.  The internship program invites students of all nationalities to take part in a series of lectures and workshops in an effort to bright light on the atrocities committed by Imperial Japan in an effort to prevent such human rights abuses from repeating. Through the program, students learn about the importance of being educated citizens on both national and international issues.

One particular issue that students work closely on is that of the unfortunate condition of Comfort Women. Queensborough Community College students have had the opportunity to work closely with the House of Sharing, a shelter for women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military, conducting interviews and raising awareness and recognition of the plight of comfort women.

While the program has enjoyed increasing popularity among the Queensborough Community College student body, the program faces an unsure future. Recent budget cuts are forcing the closure of the Asian Historic Justice Internship program. 

We need your help to maintain this valuable and necessary educational opportunity for our Queensborough Community College students. Your support will ensure that we will continue to learn from the mistakes of the past and that the stories of comfort women and other victims of Japanese war crimes will not be forgotten.

“아시안 역사 정의 인턴쉽 프로그램”을 지켜주세요!”

뉴욕시립대 퀸즈보로 커뮤니티 칼리지의 동아시아 역사 정의 프로그램을 지원해 주십시요

동북아시아역사인턴쉽은 퀸즈보로커뮤니티칼리지 쿱퍼버그 홀로코스트센터와 시민참여센터가 공동으로 운영하는 프로그램으로 퀸즈보로커뮤니티칼리지 학생들을 대상으로 2차대전 중 동북아시아에서 일본이 저지른 전쟁범죄를 교육하는 프로그램입니다.

이 프로그램은 지난 2012년 10월부터 올해 (2013년) 6월까지 두 학기 동안 진행되어 왔으며, 다양한 민족출신의 미국학생들이 열정적으로 참여하고 있는 프로그램입니다.  참가학생들은 위안부, 강제노역, 민간인 학살 등의 일본의 전쟁범죄의 역사를 체계적으로 배우고, 그 피해자들을 인터뷰하고 그것을 역사에서 지워지지 않게 기록하는 교육을 받고 있습니다. 학생들은 콜럼비아 대학에서 동아시아 역사 전공으로 박사학위를 받은 김지민 교수가 가르치고 있으며, 학기를 거듭 할 수록 수업을 듣고자 하는 신청자가 늘어가고 있습니다.      

미국 내 고등교육기간과 협력아래 한국인이 아닌 미국학생들을 대상으로 일본의 전쟁범죄를 가르치는 유일한 프로그램입니다. 일본의 전쟁범죄를 잔혹하고 동북아시아지역 전반에 걸쳐 광범위하게 이루어 졌음에도 불구하고 전세계에 잘 알려지지 않고 있는 것이 사실입니다. 따라서 서구 권의 중심인 미국에서 이 프로그램을 진행한다는 것은 대단히 의미 깊은 일일 것입니다. 또한, 매 학기 인턴쉽 수료식에 뉴욕 퀸즈지역 다수의 정치인들과 로컬미디어가 취재를 앞다투어 참여 할 만큼 지역사회에서 주목을 받고 있는 프로그램이기도 합니다.   

이 프로그램을 지속하고 확장을 위한 노력을 한다면, 마치 나치의 홀로코스트 만행을 미국학생들이 정규과목 교과서에서 배우듯이,  위안부와 같은 일본의 전쟁범죄를 모든 나라의 학생들이 배우는 날이 올 것이라고 믿고 시민참여센터는 이 프로그램을 시작했고 진행해오고 있습니다. 프로그램에 참여한 학생들이 하나 같이 인턴쉽 수료식에서 다짐하는 말이 있습니다. 그것은 “제가 죽기 전까지, 위안부 이슈와 같은 사실을 최대한 사람들에게 많이 알려서 피해자들의 한을 풀 수 있도록, 그리고 이러한 역사적 비극이 다시는 잃어나지 않도록 노력하겠습니다.” 입니다. 한국인이 아닌 미국 학생들 그것도 다양한 인종출신의 학생들의 입에서 이러한 다짐이 나오는 것을 듣는  순간의 감동을 말로는 다 설명할 수 없습니다. 그리고 그것은 역사정의를 향한 열정과 교육의 힘이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다.     

이렇게 어렵게 시작하였고, 어려운 만큼 많은 성과를 거두고 있는 동아시아 역사 인턴쉽 프로그램이 예산 부족으로 인하여 폐지의 위험에 있습니다.  프로그램을 지속하기 위해는 최소 한 학기에 $10,000 일년에 $20,000의 예산이 소요됩니다.
