Indocin and its uses

Indocin belongs to a group of medications known as NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These drugs are designed in such a way that they treat inflammations that are caused by different conditions and to relieve the pain that occurs as a result. There is a number of conditions that differ in their mechanism and the causes, but all of these conditions have one thing in common. Inflammations are common and the pain is so severe that there is no other way to manage it and to cope with it besides taking anti-inflammatory medications, among which the NSAIDs are the most commonly used ones. Indocin is one such medication and it works in such a way that it inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are molecules that cause inflammations, fever, stiffness, pain and swelling that occur as a result. In some cases, this pain and these other symptoms make it impossible for the patient to lead a normal life and that is why Indocin is used. Some of the conditions that are known to produce such pain and these inflammations include gout, arthritis, tendonitis and bursitis. Of course there are other conditions that can also be treated with Indocin and once you start taking Indocin you are going to experience many beneficial effects of this drug which will allow you lead a much healthier lifestyle that is not going to be burdened by constant pain and other symptoms of inflammations.

Using Indocin the proper way

Indocin is quite a potent medication and it is therefore of paramount importance that you share with your doctor as much as you can think about your medical history and you current medical condition. For one, you have to mention any allergies to nay medications, especially to NSAIDs or aspirin. You also need to mention any cases of severe kidney insufficiency, asthma that has been known to exacerbate when taking aspirin or if you had recent heart bypass surgery. Other conditions that might be affected by your Indocin treatment include kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, ulcers or bleeding in your gastrointestinal system, heart disease, liver disease, any blood disorders, fluid retention, clotting or bleeding problems, severe dehydration, high potassium levels, certain mental conditions, Parkinson’s disease, nasal polyps or asthma. You also need to take notice of the fact that Indocin can cause drowsiness, dizziness and other sedative and hypnotic side effects. If these should occur in your case, you are advised not to drive or participate in any hazardous activities. Furthermore, Indocin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and you should be careful when going out for longer periods of time, especially in the summer. If you are scheduled for surgery (including dental surgery), you need to inform your surgeon about your Indocin treatment as they will most likely need you to stop using the medication for a few days prior to surgery. Of course, remember never to take a larger dose of Indocin than recommended and never to decide on your own about any changes to your Indocin regimen.
