A while back I posted an image based on the Gerry Anderson TV show "Stingray" where I postulated the history of Stingray and her fleet.
For those not in the know, Stingray has a big 3 on her side, insinuating that she is the 3rd of her class or of the greater WASP (World Aquanaught Security patrol) fleet. However she is pretty much the only WASP craft seen in the show, the comics expand on it a bit, as well as Graham Bleathman's awesome cutaways, which show future Stingray type ships being assembled and heavier attack subs.
I like to think that the 3 means that Stingray is the 3rd ship of her class, but instead of having 2 other identical Stingrays, I thought it would be fun to have the design evolve over time. So here is .1, The Thresher.
I approached this from an angle of merging existing craft with stuff from the show (like I did with the Eagle Transporter a while back) so what we have is an unarmed, smaller, slower craft that could act as a testbed for the new engine design (Stingrays propulsion system being slightly different from most subs.
It's actually quite tricky to figure out exactly what that thing is. The cutaway from the Stingray annual's says its a "Contra rotating anti tourque eddy damper", (which is a sentence I really need to edge into my next conversation). The Product Enterprise model simply puts a propellor inside it. What it could be is something that has the same properties as a shrouded propellor but rotates itself in order to be able to draw in more water but have it still pushed out in a constant stream. On the Thresher I've covered it up with an immobile shroud to make it a little less advanced looking.
Other differences include no windows and side nacelles (instead of torpedo tubes) allowing for greater manoeuvrability and making up for the lack of control surfaces. An early sketch used conventional thrusters, but they just wouldn't work at the speeds this would be travelling at.
So here she is travelling beneath the arctic Ice exploring away
For an upcoming Fanderson blog post, I will be discussing this craft and postulating .4, the one that came after Stingray. For a bit of fun.
