キング(3世)氏は「今は(同運動の成果という)郷愁に浸るときではない」と話し、なお残る人種間の不公平や同性愛者に対する差別の解消、移民制度改革などへの一段の取り組みを促した。

本日私が、アメリカ合衆国史上、もっとも偉大な自由のためのデモとして歴史に刻まれることになるこの集会に、みなさんとともに参加できることを嬉しく思う。

100年後、黒人は未だにアメリカの社会の片隅でみじめに暮らし、自分たちの国なのに国外追放者かの如く感じてしまう。
そこで我々が今日ここに集結したのは、この悲惨な状況を浮き彫りにするためである。

ある意味、我々が私たちの首都に来たのは、小切手を換金するためである。我々の共和国を建設した人たちが合衆国憲法と独立宣言に高尚な言葉を書き記した時、彼らは、あらゆるアメリカ国民が受け継ぐことになる約束手形に署名したのである。この約束手形には、ある誓約がある。それは、すべての人々が生命、自由、そして幸福の追求という、奪われることのない権利を保証される、ということだ。
今明らかに、アメリカは有色人種の市民に関してこの約束手形の履行を怠っている。アメリカはこの神聖な義務を履行するどころか、黒人に対して不渡りの小切手を渡した。しかもその小切手は「残高不足」の印をつけられて戻ってきたものである。

だが我々は、正義の銀行が破産しているとは信じない。この国の可能性という巨大金庫が残高不足であるとは信じない。そこで我々は、この小切手を現金化するためにやって来た――自由という財産を、そして正義という保証を、要求に応じて受け取れる小切手を現金化するためにやって来たのだ。我々はまた、アメリカに目下深刻な緊急事態であることを知らしめるために、この神聖な場所に来ている。今は、冷却期間を置く余裕を持ったり、漸進主義という薬を処方して沈静化させたりする時ではない。

今こそ、民主主義の約束を実現する時である。
今こそ、暗く荒れ果てた人種差別の谷間から這い上がり、日の当たる人種間の平等の道へと歩む時である。
今こそ、我々の国を、人種間の不平等という泥沼から、兄弟愛という強固な岩へと引き上げる時である。
今こそ、すべての神の子のために、正義を実現する時である。

国家が目下起きている緊急事態に対し見て見ぬふりをすれば、致命的なことになりかねない。黒人たちの真っ当な不満が渦巻くこのうだるように暑い夏は、自由と平等という爽やかな秋が来るまでは過ぎ去らない。1963年は、終わりではなく、始まりなのだ。黒人は憂さを晴らす必要があったからこれでもう満足するだろうと期待する人々は、国家が旧態依然の状況に戻ったとしたら、幻滅することになるだろう。黒人に公民権が与えられるまでは、アメリカには安息も平穏も訪れることはない。正義が出現する明るい日が来るまで、抵抗の嵐はこの国の根幹を揺るがし続けることになる。

しかし私は同胞たちに言わなければならないことがある。正義という殿堂に通じる熱を帯びた入り口に立つ同胞たちよ。正当な地位をを獲得する過程で、我々は決して不法行為の罪を犯してはならない。
我々は、敵意と憎悪の杯を飲み干すことで、自由への渇きを癒やすのはやめよう。
我々は、尊厳と規律を保った高い次元で闘争を行わなくてはならない。
我々の創造性に富んだ抗議を、物理的な暴力へと貶めてはならない。
何度でも何度でも、我々は物理的な力に対して魂の力で立ち向かうという威厳ある高みへと登りつめなければならない。

驚くような新たな闘争心が黒人社会を包み込んでいる。しかしそれがすべての白人に対する不信につながってはならない。なぜなら、我々の白人の兄弟の多くが、今日彼らがここにいることからもわかるように、彼らの運命が我々の運命と結び付いていることを認識するようになったからである。そして、彼らの自由が我々の自由と密接に結びついていることを認識するようになったからである。

我々は、一人で歩くことはできない。
そして、歩くためには、前進し続けることを表明しなければならない。
我々は後戻りできない。

公民権運動に身を捧げる人々に対してこう尋ねる人たちがいる。「いつになればあなたたちは満足するのか」と。
我々は決して満足しない。黒人が、言葉に言い表せないような警察の恐ろしい虐待行為の犠牲者である限りは。
我々は決して満足しない。旅に疲れて重くなった体を休めるため、ハイウェイ沿いのモーテルや街のホテルに宿泊することができない限りは。
我々は満足しない。黒人の基本的な行動範囲が、小さなゲットーから大きなゲットーまでである限りは。

私は、あなたがたの中に大変な試練と苦難から脱してきた人々が、今日ここにいることに対して気を留めずにはいられない。あなたがたの中に、刑務所の狭い独房から出てきたばかりの人もいる。そしてあなたがたの中に、自由を追求したがゆえに迫害の嵐に打ちのめされ、警察の虐待行為の逆風によろめいた場所からやって来た人たちもいる。あなたがたは、他にはない苦痛を受けた歴戦の勇者である。報われない苦しみは贖われるという信念を持って活動し続けよう。

帰ろう、ミシシッピへ。
帰ろう、アラバマへ。
帰ろう、サウスカロライナへ。
帰ろう、ジョージアへ。
帰ろう、ルイジアナへ。
帰ろう、北部の都市のスラム街やゲットーへ。
とにかくこの状況を変えられると、そして変わると信じて。

絶望の谷間でもがくのはやめよう。友よ、今日私は皆さんに言いたい。我々は今日も明日も困難に直面しているが、それでも私には夢がある。それは、アメリカンドリームに深く根ざした夢である。

私には夢がある。いつの日か、この国が立ち上がり、「すべての人間は生まれながらにして平等であることを、自明の真理と信じる」(訳注・アメリカ独立宣言)というこの国の信条を真の意味で実現させるという夢が。

今日、私には夢がある！

私には夢がある。いつの日か、卑劣な人種差別主義者たちがいて、「連邦政府の干渉排除」や「連邦権力の無効化」という言葉を弄する州知事のいるアラバマ州でさえも、いつの日かそのアラバマでさえも、黒人の少年少女が白人の少年少女と兄弟姉妹として手を取り合うようになるという夢が。

今日、私には夢がある！

私には夢がある。それは、いつの日か、「谷はすべて身を起こし、山と丘は身を低くせよ。険しい道は平らに、狭い道は広い谷となれ。主の栄光がこうして現れるのを/肉なる者は共に見る。主の口がこう宣言される」という夢が。（訳注・旧約聖書イザヤ書4-5）

これが我々の希望である。この信念をもって、私は南部へ帰る。

この信念があれば、我々は絶望の山の中から希望の石を切り出すことができる。
この信念があれば、我々はこの国の騒々しい不協和音を美しき兄弟愛のシンフォニーに変えることができる。
この信念があれば、我々はいつの日かともに働き、ともに祈り、ともに闘い、ともに罪を償い、ともに自由のために立ち上がることができるだろう。いつの日か自由になると確信して。

そして、アメリカが偉大な国家となるためには、これを実現せねばならない。
だからこそ、自由の鐘を響かせよう、ニューハンプシャーの広大な丘の上から。
自由の鐘を響かせよう、ニューヨークの雄大な山脈から。
自由の鐘を響かせよう、ペンシルベニアのアレゲーニー山脈の高みから。
自由の鐘を響かせよう、雪に覆われたコロラドのロッキー山脈から。
自由の鐘を響かせよう、カリフォルニアのなだらかな丘陵から。
それだけではない。
自由の鐘を響かせよう、ジョージアのストーン・マウンテンから。
自由の鐘を響かせよう、テネシーのルックアウト・マウンテンから。
自由の鐘を響かせよう、ミシシッピのすべての丘とくぼみから。
すべての山々から、自由の鐘を響かせよう。

これが実現した時、自由の鐘を響かせた時、あらゆる村やあらゆる集落、あらゆる州とあらゆる都市から自由の鐘を響かせた時、我々は神の子全員が、そして黒人も白人も、ユダヤ教徒もユダヤ教徒以外の人も、プロテスタントもカトリックも、ともに手をとり合って古い黒人霊歌を歌うことのできる日が来るのを早めることができる。

「ついに自由になった!　ついに自由になった!　全能の神に感謝しよう、我々はついに自由になったのだ!」
