INDIANAPOLIS — Brianna Rollins (Miami, Fla.) of Clemson University has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting the collegiate record in the 100 meter hurdles at the NCAA Division I Championships in Eugene, Ore on June 8.

The red-shirt junior won Thursday’s semifinal in a time of 12.47 seconds to set her first collegiate record of the weekend, before improving her own record two days later in the final.

“On Saturday, I didn’t think about trying to break the record again,” Rollins said. “I just wanted to go out and run a relaxed race and try not to press because I ran so well Thursday.”

Ginnie Powell previously held the record of 12.48 seconds when she attended USC in 2006. Rollins’ mark in the 100m hurdles is the fastest in the world this season. Her performance is also is a record for Hayward Field.

“On Wednesday before the semifinals, I kept telling my teammates, ‘I’m going to break this record. I know I can run [that time],’” Rollins said. “My teammates were really happy for me after the race. They said, ‘You actually spoke those words and you broke the record.’”

This is her first outdoor championship. Rollins won the indoor 60m hurdles this season as well as in her sophomore year. Rollins will compete in Des Moines, Iowa next weekend at the USA Outdoor Championships.
