Two brand-new V-44As were delivered to the JGSDF in 1959 with the serials 50001 & 50002, and served until 1972,
when they were replaced by KV-107. These two were used to develop future heliborne operations within JGSDF. Color
scheme was olive-darb overall with white markings. Both V-44s were subsequently preserved at Okadama JGSDF Base
(50001, see the above photo) and at Kisarazu JGSDF Base (50002). Currently(2012) the 50001 is displayed at Bihoro

Impressed by the HU-1 Iroquois's career in the US Army, the JGSDF ordered ninety HU-1Bs from Fuji Heavy Industries,
Bell's Japanese licensee, between 1962 and 1971 (serials 41501 to 41590). These were followed by contracts for 133 Fuji-Bell
HU-1H from 1972 onward. All the HU-1Bs were delivered in an overall olive-drab scheme with dayglow orange fuselage/tail
bands. The olive-drab scheme had been changed to green/brown/black camouflage scheme during 1986-87, but many HU-1Bs
had been withdrawn from use before the new camouflage scheme was introduced. The above three photos show two olive-drab

During the early 1980's, some experimental camouflage schemes were applied on some of the HU-1Hs and the above two photos
show examples of such experimental paint schemes. Camouflage patterns of both HU-1Hs were basically the same but the colors
used were partly different. The top one (JG-1633) was camouflaged in brown, dark green and dark grey with white markings.
The immediate above HU-1H(JG-1626) was camouflaged in field green, dark green and dark grey with "BLACK" markings. Notice
the size of the national roundel(red sun) on the JG-1626(immediate above), which was smaller than the standard size roundel
to minimize the visibility. Both HU-1Hs were operated by Eastern Army Heli.Sqdn.(coded EH) based at Tachikawa near Tokyo.

roundel on the tail was painted over with fresh olive-drab paint and the size of the roundel was reduced a lot in size. Also,
dayglo-orange area on the pontoon side was re-painted in two tones of green on JG-1704 (top photo) or in black/green on JG-1702
