Jerid salvages railguns and giant cannons, guns down anyone showing up to steal his treasure, recruits people and ships to join him.

Chamber tells Ledo to man the fuck up because regardless of what the hideauze once were, they chose to throw away their forms, intelligence, culture and civilization just to escape death and are now a bunch of murderous abominations and mankind will never be able to co-exist with them.

All of a sudden he picks up an allied signal. It's Ledo's superior guy from the first episode!

There'd also be no point. If the point of Chamber up till now is that he remains an emotionless killing machine while Ledo learns to be more then the point of the new guy is that he never learns to relax, enjoy life and be more than a soldier since he'll just arrive and take exception to who Ledo has become, especially upon learning about the reality of the Hidauze - at which point he'll force a confrontation - presumably with Chamber sacrificing himself to help pull out a win because while he may not sympathize with the Hidauze he does care for Ledo.

I'm conflicted here.

On the one hand, having Kugel return serves as a good way to complete the circle and I guess he does carry some symbolic weight despite his limited screen time.

On the other hand, it does come across as a little too cheap when the show could have otherwise dealt with its themes, perhaps in a more powerful way, without suddenly re-introducing an obvious antagonist near the end..

As cliche as it is to bring in a final villain, there's probably not a better way to show Ledo's (and possibly Chambers) changes than to bring in someone who still is the way they used to be that the show can compare and contrast them against.
