The space chick was talking about "understanding", but we may be safe, I don't think the rape kingdom wants to understand their prey.

At very least I think Valvrave is safe from understanding. I don't think anyone in that show is sane enough to try peaceful resolutions.

I don't he's evil, as much as his programing is absolute. He serves the alliance, not Ledo. He's programed to kill the enemy. Period. Ledo says, "wait, don't kill the cute squid, baby, mermaid thing until we know what is going on" and the overriding program is "kill the enemy", chamber is going to kill the enemy. Granted chamber is no longer Ledo's bro, but he wasn't really meant to be. They were both machines made for killing, it's just Ledo as a human with emotions and imagination can be other things.

It's hackneyed in this particular sense in that it's another abrupt, jarring twist to force in this outlook that's all-pervasive in so many Japanese shows as of late.

The most recent posts have also encapsulated this quite neatly:

Possibly because humans aren't very well adapted for life outside of our particular gravity ball and genetic modification is a good way to circumvent that. Also, fermi paradox. Also, time and distance make people forget shit all the time. Also, Heroic Age isn't and there's probably dozens of other anime in the last few years alone that also aren't, though that's the first to jump to mind.

>>9186452

If it's all-pervasive it can't really be jarring, especially given people have been calling this show to go full UNDERSTANDING since episode one. Again, the distinct possibility exists that the production team have some purpose to doing this that will be explained later, stuff brought up in one episode often does get explained or examined later in shows.

You CAN forgive people, but still hold them accountable for their actions. That's the whole point of incarceration and such. Why do these retarded writers have to let these murderers off scott-free though? That isn't fair to the people that they've harmed to simply say that there's no consequences to their actions.

That's something I've noticed in a lot of these stories, actions don't often have any concrete consequences.

Because Japan has really, really weird ideas about how evolution works.

Think about it. Yeah, you can dismiss Pokemon for just being a gimmicky kids show... but TTGL and Getter are both explicitly POWERED by Evolution.

Akira? Physics are just people who tap into the limitless potential of evolution.

Evangelion and all of the many similar shows that end with an assimilation plot? Forced Evolution is the not-entirely-evil badguy goal.

Humans vs the next stage of evolution.

Humans vs genetically engineered people.

Humans vs genetically engineered monsters.

It just keeps happening. Japan very much thinks of Evolution as a Thing, not a Process.

If they can't even find one suitable planet and have to live in colonies then it indicates that Earth is the only place humans can comfortably live and have to change significantly to live in other environments. Couple it with the fact that the show has only one other alien species in all that space and it indicates the show is going for a universe (or at least a galaxy) where humans and humans alone reside a la the fermi paradox.

You are drawing a LOT of conclusions that fit in hindsight, but in no way focus the storyline into its current form. No, earth was entering a natural ice age, so the Evolvers (an organization) start doing experiments on creating a new form of humanity that can survive in space.

The continental Alliance (The government which eventually becomes the galactic alliance) freaks out and goes to war with the evolvers.

Both factions have to leave earth as it freezes over, and the war expands into space. The Alliance dosn't go transhuman like the evolvers so they are stuck living in ships unable to find a suitable planet. As they fight the Evolvers for thousands of years, there society becomes more militaristic and utilitarian due to the constraints of living in space. All they have left is the fact that they are still "Human" so they rename themselves the Galactic Alliance of Humanity. They also rename the Evolvers "Hidazue" (Hideous) for propaganda reasons.

This is of course kept secret from low ranking soldiers like Leddo.

Normal squid swim ass first.

As for "Why can't they find a planet like earth" they said in episode 1, that there are no other planets like earth. While this may not jive with many current theories, it's part of the established setting that earthlike planets are rare.
Humanity had two options, stay human and live under an oppressive regime searching for a planet that might support life, or turn themselves into transhuman space squids and be able to adapt to live in any environment.

It's an interesting dichotomy because one side became inhuman in there form, while the other side maintains there physical humanity, but has there society reduced to an inhuman police state.

>There are no planets like Earth

...But there are.

There's no 'theory' that postulates the mere existence of a planet like Earth, there are verified planets, charted and documented, that can very likely support human life. Hell, as early as back in April, two Earth-like planets with conditions very similar to our own were discovered - folks called them the best candidates for habitability found so far. Back in 2011, there was a report suggesting that 54 planets discovered by the Kepler telescope fell within the habitable zone, and had conditions conducive to liquid water, precipitating a possibility of future human habitation. 54!

And yet despite these discoveries, the Alliance wanders aimlessly in space.

Aren't those planets the sort that Mars and Venus are considered more habitable by humans? Sure, we could live on them if we drop huge domes on them and climate control everything, but we'd have to do that for a featureless hunk of rock anyway. The closest thing those planets have going for them is gravity, and I recall seeing estimates that they were between a quarter and 4x the mass of earth. They certainly don't have stable atmospheres with the correct blend of Oxygen and Nitrogen.

The habitable planets listed in the extra-solar planetary database and such places are listed because they fall in the goldilocks zone of their system's sun (so probably around the right year round temperatures for life) and are theorized to have the kind of planetary composition and atmospheres for life. None of it is definite yet though, contrary to what >>9186632 said. They may be able to support life, but they may turn out to be completely adverse to it too due to as you say odd mixes of various gases in the atmosphere that are unbreathable by us or what have you.

>>9186640

None of the planet was covered in water at points. The environment changes. This is just another one, something happened that caused water levels to increase, not just the seas but the amount of water trapped in ice etc. It must have rained for a long time at some point.

Likely isn't a certainty. While they may seem to fit conditions using methods to observe, there's no way to tell if it's actually true without actually traveling there which isn't currently possible for us.

With that being said, when it comes to works of fictions, a person needs to have a suspension of disbelief. Without it, then you could nitpick everything in pretty much every work of fiction (and most likely some works of nonfiction with recent scientific breakthroughs). Although the fact a planet capable supporting human life no being found could also be a lie spread the galactic federation just to prolong the war vs space squids.

Isn't the current north really south anyway? But they stick with it just because. Same reason electrons actually move to opposite way of the current because they originally just guessed which way they were going.

>Atmosphere is just something that makes that process slower than on planets/moons without one.

Because atmosphere is made of those molecules and gasses. Gravity keeps them around the earth. Unless they have massive velocity I don't see how they can escape earths gravity field.

"North" and "South" is something we decided. We could just as easily reverse it and it wouldn't change anything.

Well, we'd have to bolt everything down first, otherwise it would fall over while the directions adjusted.

North and south are just subjective points on a map calculated using the Earth's magnetic field, which changes every couple of million or so years from my understanding. As far as I know scientists expect it to change again at any time since it's roughly due, so even though it's doubtful, it's still possible that within your lifetime south could become north and vice-versa.

What I've never been terribly clear on is what kind of effect this would have on the environment, if any. Would it cause natural disasters of any kind when it happened, or would it simply be needles point a different way, most people don't even notice kind of thing?

Actually we are slowly losing our atmosphere and water.

Hydrogen ions in the upper atmosphere can reach escape velocity and slowly leak into space.

It's been linked to mass extinctions. Some (most, I think) migratory birds, for example, have been shown to rely on magnetic fields to know where to migrate.

We named the horth end of the compass north because it points that direction, so yes technically the north has the magnetic south pole

the magnetic field drops to a lower amout so it lets more of that sweet sweet sun radiation pass

So we all bake alive because of radiation if it happens? Not that we won't anyway because of global warming. Which would be happening anyways even if humans never existed because we're coming out of the colder part of an inter-glacial period.

Even using a compass, there is no real reason why north has to be up. We just put it that way because western Europe (the people who make the maps) are on the northern hemisphere, and wanted to be on top.

If Africans had become the dominant culture, you can be sure south would be up and north would be down.

For a group of humans re-discovering earth with nothing to use as reference, there is a 50/50 chance of picking either direction to be up on a map. The studio probably picked south as up to make the Gargantians seem exotic.

What if the squids have nothing against humanity as a whole and just really, really hate the Gargantians?

The squids don't hate the Gargantians though. The space squids are naturally at war with the Alliance, but the earth squids only seem interested in defending there nest.
