This document explains how to use the XPS Viewer application.
Command line
The XPS Viewer application can be launched directly from the command line. An XPS document can be opened from the command line by passing the document name (and path) as the first command line argument.
e.g. XPSViewer.exe document.xps
Toolbar
The toolbar window displays a range of commonly used controls for viewing documents. This toolbar can be shown/hidden from the menu option View -> Toolbar.
These commands can also be found on the standard application menu.
From left to right.
Open, Close, First Page, Previous Page, Next Page, Last Page, Goto Page, Fit Page Width, Fit Page Height, Fit Page, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Zoom level, Rotate left, Rotate right, About.
Status Bar
The status bar window displays the current status of the application. This status bar can be shown/hidden from the menu option View -> Status Bar.
From left to right.
- Application status – One of three modes, Ready (The application is in an idle state ready for input), Rendering (the application is rendering a page with the current view settings), Parsing (the application is loading and parsing the XPS document content).
- Aliasing mode – reflects the current rendering mode which is either Aliased or Anti-Aliased, this setting can be changed from the View -> Anti-Aliased menu option.
- Zoom percentage – displays the current zoom magnification that the page is being rendered at.
- Page size - displays the actual size in pixels of the page being rendered to screen.
- Page – shows the current page number being displayed and the total number of pages in the document.
Menu options
The application menu bar supports the following commands:
- File
- Open - Open an XPS document to view.
- Close - Close the currently open XPS document.
- Recent Files - Open a file from the last 10 previously loaded XPS documents.
- Exit - Close down and exit the application.
- View
- Goto- Below this menu item are controls to navigation the document.
- First Page- Display the first page in the document.
- Next Page - Display the next page in the document.
- Previous Page - Display the previous page in the document.
- Last Page - Display the last page in the document.
- Page... - Display the specified page in the document.
- Zoom- Below this menu item are zoom magnification controls.
- Zoom To... - Zoom to a specified size in the range 10% -> 1,000%
- Fit Page - Fit the current page width and height to ensure that the entire page is visible maximizing the application window.
- Actual Size - Scale the page to 100% which is the actual size that the document was designed to be viewed at.
- Fit Page Width - Fit the current page width to maximize the application window.
- Fit Page Height - Fit the current page height to maximize the application window.
- Zoom In - Increase the zoom level that the document is being viewed at.
- Zoom Out - Decrease the zoom level that the document is being viewed at.
- Rotate View- Below this menu item are controls for rotating the viewing angle for the document.
- Rotate Right - Rotate the document 90 degrees to the right.
- Rotate Left - Rotate the document 90 degrees to the left.
- Anti-Aliasing- Toggle the Aliasing mode between Aliased and Anti-Aliased. This facility determines whether edges are rendered with a smoothing effect. The technique called Anti-Aliasing simulates a higher resolution than the actual screen is capable of by smoothing the edges of shapes.

- Color Profile...- This is an advanced option which provides control over the color matching process. The color matching intent mode and the destination ICC color profile can be specified.
- The color Intent can be one of the following: Perceptual, Saturation, Relative Colorimetric and Absolute colorimetric. By default Perceptual is used.
- The destination color profile can be defined by enabling the color profile checkbox and loading a valid ICC color profile. If no color profile is specified then sRGB is used as the destination color space.
- Toolbar - Toggle the toolbar window on and off
- Status Bar - Toggle the status bar window on and off
