Cialis’s Humble Beginnings
Cialis is appealing to more men in their late years because of its long lasting effect. But, only a few of these men know how this drug all started. In this article, one will know more about the humble beginnings of this wonderful medication.
Basically, the production of Cialis started when GlaxoSmithKline who was then Glaxo Wellcome, partnered with the ICOS Company in 1991. Two years after, ICOS began observing a chemical compound known as IC351, a Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Then, in 1994, Pfizer who was also studying another chemical substance that inhibits PDE5, discovered that Sildenafil can also treat erectile dysfunction in men as much as it can help treat cardiovascular diseases.
Pfizer’s new observation on the PDE5 inhibitor, Sildenafil led to ICOS’s finding that IC351 has also a potential in curing erectile dysfunction. So, in the same year, ICOS decided to get a patent for the IC351 and conduct further studies with it. In 1995, ICOS began the first phase of the series of necessary clinical trials for the substance. After two years, the company initiated the second and third phases of their clinical trials. They were indeed successful in their quest because in the same year, the company obtained the approval of the Food and Drug Administration or FDA.
But, the path for Cialis is not easy. After ICOS has acquired FDA’s approval, GlaxoSmithKline dropped its partnership with the company in 1996. Because of this, ICOS has to go solo with their launching of Cialis into the market. Good thing, the Eli Lily and Company came into the picture in 1998. With the partnership of these two companies, they tried to promote Tadalafil (the generic name for IC351) as a medication for erectile dysfunction. In addition, both companies registered again the compound IC351 at FDA under the name of their new partnership in 2000.
In 2002, the Lily ICOS partnership listed to the American Urological Association (ARU) its newest finding. That’s because their recent observation of Tadalafil or Cialis shows that the medication can work up to 36 hours. This is really a major breakthrough in the treatment of erectile dysfunctions in men because other similar drugs reported to last for just four hours.
Because of the success of Cialis in the market, the Eli Lily and Company decided to gain significant influence on ICOS by acquiring the company for 2.3 billion USD. Under the new management, Cialis maintained its brand name in the market. Also, further researches about the medication were made. In 2011, these studies become fruitful as Cialis was proven to treat another disorder in men known as the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
The development of Cialis is really a product of an unending research. In fact, the Eli Lily and Company continues to find new potentials in Tadalafil. Today, the researchers of the drug continue to reap the results of their diligence and hard work. That’s because, the drug was able to gain the trust of men who have actually tried it.
